To Fly, By Joshua Gorrell

The sky is my world, and that is where I do my living. My friends are eagles and hawks. The raptors of the sky, and I’m one of them. I watch the street blow with my enhanced vision waiting to see the prey that I’m waiting on. My stare is hard and long, I never lose sight of what is my target once it shows itself. This part builds the tension, as my heart starts to pound and my adrenaline starts to pump. Then there it is, the prey that I’ve been waiting on. A gun runner and now he is fleeing the scene of a drop off, but right now he doesn’t know he is being watched, he doesn’t have the fear just yet that he is being watched and hunted. It’s when he gets the fear that I get even more excited, and then I get to hunt that which I want to catch.

Standing I spread my arms and then fall forward. The rush I get as the ground comes screaming at is unexplainable. The hunt is now mine and the air blows about me as I fly out leveling off to follow the prey. This is the part that most thrills me, the thrill of the flight. I can soar where no man can. I can get to locations that man only dreams of getting to. Yeah they have machines that can reach locations I hunt in, but I don’t require any machines to get there. I feel the air and can breathe it all in as I keep my eyes on my prey, and let my heart race at the excitement that was about to happen.

I have no wings, but I can channel my power to lift me off and give the ability to soar as fast as any bird of prey, even man made. Reaching out I grab the air pull it back at me. I fly forward and then seek out an opportunity to cause some excitement. I needed my prey to panic and start to run. I needed and wanted him to run. I wanted him to try and escape I wanted that thrill, and sought it out. My night here is what I live for, and I wasn’t going to spoil it. This prey needed to be caught and, oh how I wish I wanted to tear him apart, but there was something holding me back. My honor as a hero, and good person, besides the hunt was the part that I wanted and no more. Now let’s hunt for this prey.

Let me just maneuver on down a little closer and give him a sight that will cause him to reeve it up a bit. Moving on in I get right over the car that he is driving. I wait for the right moment and then move on beside him and stay even with his window. At first he doesn’t even notice me there watching. I give him a salute and that does it. He turns quickly to see me there watching him. I smile and then point at him. He suddenly punches it and rushes forward. He zigs and zags through the traffic. What good will that do? I can fly over the traffic. I pull up and then fly faster to run on up to my prey.

This prey was in a hurry, but where oh where is this mouse heading. Moving on out and up I stay hidden, but my eyes never leave him. He can’t see my anymore, but that image of me there has him on edge now. He is driving faster and more reckless, but that is what I want. I want that nest he hides in, I want the other mice that hide from sight. This might just turn out to be a feast indeed.

He turns that way and this way, till he is at the docks. I perch myself high above to keep an eye out. I wait and watch as my prey scurries about the floor below me. I feel myself make a half smile. I have found my nest and now the fun will only get more entertaining. Waiting and watching, I start to see other mice about the floor. On hiding in a crane used to move containers about. Tsk, tsk, the high ground is my territory little mouse. Then I notice three more scattered about the warehouse that my main prey has ran to. I believe at this moment things for him might be getting bad. You see my little salute to him caused him to panic and with that he ran home, and I bet big daddy didn’t like the fact that I spotted him, knowing damn well I will be able to follow him. I wonder how it is going for him in there.

Oh, look two more guarding a door way, but something is off here. I feel as though there are more way more. Focusing my power I enhance my vision to all me to see in the dark. Ah, there you all are. I see that they were prepared for me here in this place. Maybe my prey was not as blind I had had made out. Maybe he wanted me to follow and end up here in this place. Clever little mouse, but not clever enough. You have just made me more interested in you and the chase will that more fun to endure. Now let’s see who to take first. The crane would be the obvious one, but that’s why he is there. He is there to flush me out and get me to make a move. You have to have more out there ready to strike. I look around and try to spot another landing [perch to survey the area. There I see one, It is further away, but is the opposite view point.

Flying over I quickly pass high above, and I do I keep an eye open for more men. There are two more. This is turning out to be quiet a big nest of mice. More fun for me then. Landing I look back and again I’m looking for more prey to catch. There three more posted up on tops of the warehouses. Ah, I see that they are covered in some kind of blanket that is keeping them from my sight. Clever yet again prey, but still not enough. Time to start the capture.

Flying high I circle the area, the rooftops are my first target. They are there to take shots at me, need to finish them off. I circle one more time and then point in and scream down. The air arts out of my way as I blur to my target. I level out just high enough to graze the top of him. Just as I pass I reach out and grab him. Nothing but a quick noise of me picking him up and taking him skyward. He screams for only a moment as I knock him out. I fly him over the river and then throwing him in quiet a distance away from the dock his friends reside in. I do the same to the other two. Now time for the Crane. He on the other hand is going to require a more personal touch, as the safety rails will not allow for close flight.

I fly in close and watch as he searches the sky for me. He has yet to even see that his back up is gone. I swoop in and land quietly as the air blowing about. I land on the dark side of the crane. He is walking back and forth looking up. “Knock, Knock”, I say. He jumps turning quickly to shoot but I grab his gun and then flip him off the edge. I drop the gun on top of the crane the dive with a smile on my face. I catch up to him as he falls screaming in agony. I smile then grab him in the last moment and speed him across the water and drop him in. I turn and head back now for the eight that hide in the shadows on the ground.

Just then as I prepare to fly in something slams into me from the side. I twist and turn and fill a pain in my side. I slam into the roof of one of the warehouses. I stand back up and look around wondering what it was. Then again something swoops by and I feel a fist connect on my face spinning me through the air and then hitting the roof hard. I roll over and try to pull myself together. Then there hovering in the air is someone, or something. It smiles at me showing long jagged teeth and red piercing eyes. A Drogin, a demon winged monster. Why the hell was this thing here? How did it get here? I hear a clap in the back ground and roll over to look behind me. In the distance with my vision I see my prey is standing outside the warehouse and looking towards me with Binoculars. He smiles and flips me off. I smile as well. This night has indeed turned out to be something special. A challenge has been presented to me indeed, and I’m all for it. I don’t know how this creature is linked to my prey, but this will indeed be fun. I stand and the hoover up to the same level as my enemy. I smile and it growls with a smile. “Let’s do this”, I said.

It screams at me and then charges. I boost my power and ascend skyward at great haste. It turns and quickly follows.  I suddenly stop and rotate back towards him catching him off guard and slam both fist into its chest pushing him back towards the ground. “Let’s see how you like the pavement”, I say. It screams in anger, but I fly faster and faster. Just when I about to pull up I fill it grab me and not let go. It’s going to crash with me. I try to pull up, but can’t get out of the grip. It then slam my fist into its head causing it to loosen just enough to release, but it is too late I can’t pull up. So, I quickly position myself to land on the creature to help my decent. We crash in the ground the creature screams out in pain and I crumple into its chest, then bounce on to the ground. The shock of the stop breaking an arm. I roll over breathing hard at the pain and impact that took my breath away. I look up into the sky and reached my good arm out wanting to fly once more, but I hear the mice running for me. A bird as landed wounded on the ground. They scurry to get a meal. I struggle to sit up, the Drogin is still moving though very weary from the crash. I carry a sword curve and sharp as a razor. It is my talon, and this creature needs to die. I pull myself up slowly, and limp over to the creature. It see me coming and tries to get up, but its back is broken from the hip down. It sprawls out its wings and then uses them to push itself up and starts to crawl away. “I don’t think so”, I said, and jumped into the air then I come screaming down driving my sword right below the back of the neck and into the ground in which it crawled. There was no movement. It was gone, now my focus was back on my prey.

My arm was shot, there was nothing to do with it now. The pain throbbed, but I need to do something. Then I saw it, a mage dress in his robe. I heard they were in town, and working with a gang on things, and now I see how the Drogin was possible. I could see he was busy trying a spell. I recognized it, he was trying to summon another one. I don’t think so, so I took to the sky and then turned straight for them. Taking my talon, I placed in my hand like a javelin. Screaming towards them with shots going off towards me, at the right point I thrusted my talon forward and sent it slicing through the air. It rolled over and over again. The mage had no time to react. My talon connected directly in its chest. A red burning smoke started to escape the wound and soon the real face of the mage was revealed and was revile. It fell to the ground vaporizing into the red smoke.

Now my prey was worried, it had been clever to set this trap, but had greatly underestimated its prey. Now I was back in the hunt. I might have been wounded, but I was still hungry. I flew in behind the warehouse where they could not see me. They were now gathered in the light and circled their boss, my prey, and were all visible. I needed just him and I was going to get him. My talon laid on the ground outside the circle, but I was fling about the shadows causing chaos for the mice. My flight was echoing about the floor and I was moving fast here and there. They couldn’t keep a bead on where I was moving to. Suddenly I moved in and flew straight by them, reaching out I grabbed my sword and then was gone. They shot about, even wounding some of their own. I then came right back from a different direction K.O.ing two of them as I flew by. The rush I was feeling as the air flew by and the looks on their faces of confusion and terror. This was it this was the end. The circled tight and my prey was in the center. Time to unleash my landing. I swooped up straight into the air and directly over the middle of them. I flew straight down just as I was about to enter the light I slowed myself and then flipped over landing right in the middle of them. I grabbed my prey and then with all my power blasted an energy wave out from me as I blew into the sky. All the mice flew through the air and landed on the ground scattered and confused as to what happened.

The police drove in as I sat on a perch watching. My prey was tied and gagged as I watched with a smile on my face. They would be looking for my prey for some time, but hey weren’t’ going to find him. My trophy was mine, and I was not going to part from it. Standing I looked to the sky. I then looked at my prey. “Time to fly”, I said.
