The Harbinger Tales, By Joshua Gorrell

“The Harbinger Tales” is a story of a masterful warrior, darkened by his past, but sure of himself. He is the last of a forgotten race of beings that mean more to their world then anyone knows. He made the name of Harbinger during the great war, but the Darkness of old might be returning and the harbinger might just be right in the middle of the battle once more. The Harbinger and his loyal friend beast once more take up the banner of the Harbinger and quest out to discover if the one that darkened the world once before, is back.

The Harbinger Tales – “Day Of Last Peace” Ep. (1)

It is early morning, and a light fog is seen throughout the trees. The soft glow of light is starting to engulf the forest. Birds are starting their morning songs, and everything is still. Due is dripping ever so slowly off the leaves and grass. The forest is awaking and all manner of life is starting to come to alive. A deer comes out from a small rocky creek having just drank. Stepping ever so gently and purposely. Its’ tail twitching ever so often. It raises its’ head looks about and then lowers it to eat, and then raising again to chew and look around.

In the distance we find a man with a bow strung and poised at the ready. The man’s name is Mathis. He lives in these woods and makes his living off the forest. He stands at average height, and is lean but fit. His face is rough and his black hair is long from living alone for a time. His green eyes ever looking and calculating. He is still and hidden in the brush. His breath is slow as not to be seen in the morning coolness. He is relaxed and patient, waiting for that moment that is right.

The moment draws near and with his left hand grips the bow tightly but soundly. He pulls it up and with his right hand he slides his fingers down the shaft to the back of the arrow. The feathers brushing through his fingers as he reaches the end of the arrow and hooks the string to draw. He rises slowly still hidden by the brush. He draws back the bow and then stands waiting for the target to show itself.

Mathis knows how the target is going to move and knows exactly when to release. Years he has trained to be patient and to wait on targets to move into position. Though deer was not his target and the stakes were much higher. Years of this had made this a reflex on instinct. Every muscle and sense heightened to the extreme as this was nothing more than a reaction to him. The air grows still and time seems to slow. His breath held and bow drawn. The arrow pointed towards the target is set loose. For a moment in time everything is frozen except the arrow as it moves effortlessly towards its target. It strikes with precision and the target falls. Mathis still standing poised after releasing the arrow closes his eyes thinking. Replaying the event from beginning to end and seeing it in slow motion. He sees every detail and what seems like minutes of standing and replaying is but a second. He was trained to always do this, and now it has now become a habit.

Mathis walks calmly to the fallen deer and kneels before it. He places one hand on the body and out of respect for the animal says thanks for the food that it has provided to him. After field dressing the deer and placing the remains in a leather pouch, he hoist the body of the deer over his left shoulder and proceeds to walk back home.

Mathis’s home is settled in-between mountains in the valley where he has made his home out of ruins of an old kingdom that long ago stood, but has long been taken back by the forest. His home is made up of an old stone dwelling whose purpose has long been lost. He has modified it to allow for a kitchen and living space. Modest and organized Mathis builds what he needs and sees to it to not disturb the forest more than needed. He has built a small forge out of another ruined building so that he might make and mend his arrows, axes, and swords. The forest is full of creatures and beings that have no master but their own. Mathis has learned how to live and survive here for long time, and has learned that protection from the world is always needed.

Upon arriving at his home Mathis sets the deer’s body on a table outside. Later he will carve it to his needs and store the rest for later, but first he must attend to something. Mathis grabs the pouch of the remains and very distinctly gives out a unique whistle. The whistle’s sound echos slightly through the forest and stone area, and then from a short distance the sound of quick footsteps can be heard approaching. Standing holding the pouch at his right side Mathis sees something moving in the bushes ahead of him. He kneels down and places the pouch on the ground. He unties it and pours out the remains. He stands and steps back. Giving out another unique whistle the creature springs forth and runs to the remains. In a matter of moments the remains are gone and the creature is laying licking its jowls and satisfied from the snack. The creature’s name is Kraygoss a wolf like creature that Mathis has befriended and is now his loyal companion.

Kraygoss is a Wargone, creatures that live solitaire lives and wander much of the world where forest meets mountainous regions. They stand to an average man’s chest and are covered in fur. Their senses are heightened and are extremely resilient. Their hide can even take a striking sword blow. Kraygoss’s face has black around his muzzle and that fades to a dark sandy tan down his back to his tail and down his legs with black slightly showing through . The inside of his legs and belly are white. He is Mathis’ closest friend and companion and travels with him everywhere, but Mathis does not chain him nor confine him in any way. Kraygoss is free to wonder and be what he is.

He walks over to Kraygoss and kneels to pet him and rub behind his ears. Kraygoss’ eyes sightly close as this is something he loves very much. Mathis bends his head over and touches his head to Kraygoss and speaks softly to him. “Good Boy Kraygoss, that’s a good boy”, Mathis says. Mathis then stands up, looks around, stretches some, and then walks over to the deer to finish what he started. Kraygoss stays laying down watching intently to make sure no scraps happen to make it on the ground for him to clean up.

The day moves forward and lunch time has come. Mathis whistles for Kraygoss and the two of them set forth down a path to a place that grows wild fruit. The walk takes some time to complete, but the fruit is very fulfilling and good for the body. Kraygoss doesn’t care much for the fruit, but unknown to him Mathis slips in some mashed up pieces just to help with his overall health. The fruit has healing remedies and helps a lot with soreness and sickness. This is also the time of the year to harvest them. It is spring and that is when they come out, but it is only for one month and then they are gone, so Mathis makes sure to get plenty. He has developed a way to store them, but only takes what he needs and makes sure to plant the seeds to grow more. He has even started a crop closure to his home, but it will be a few years before they are ready.

While Mathis eats, Kraygoss lays about in the sun and then in the shade as he gets too hot.  Some birds flock in and start to talk. Kraygoss apparently gets pretty annoyed by them and starts to try to catch them, but fails many times as they are small and fast. He finally catches one and seemed particularly satisfied with himself when doing so. Giving out a short howl and he then looks at Mathis as to say “Look what I did.” Mathis laughs and says, “bout time.” Kraygoss tilts his head seeming confused, but quickly returns his attention to his prize and eats it.

On the way back home Mathis takes a different path as to check one of his traps he has set to catch small game. He has a series of these set everywhere, and checks them periodically as he travels to different areas for other supplies. They are always on his routes and this saves him a day of checking all of them at once. Upon getting to a small creek to get some water, Mathis notices something is not right. Even Kraygoss seems to smell something in the air. They cross the creek and on the other side is a trail that has just recently been created. Mathis can see that there are subtle hints that he can read that trouble him. He notices someone or something has been traveling through recently. In a common forest this would be nothing new, but this is no common forest. Traffic like this can mean only a few things, most of which are not good.

Mathis’ life before living here made him a highly sought after person. He was sought after by kings, Queens, and many others. Man, elves, dwarfs, and others of the like wanted him because of his abilities, and that is something he has had a hard time escaping. Through his travels and missions he has also made many enemies that would love to see him dead. That is why he has chosen this forest to live in. It is full of beast and other fowl creatures, but no army occupies it and rules over it. However, a darkness does seem to have a hold in some parts of the woods and mountainous areas. For goblins live in the mountains within the caves. Mathis himself has ventured to the caves with Kraygoss. He traveled to study them and find out their movements and where they travel, but they do not travel this far from their territory.

Mathis has an idea though as to the creatures that traveled here, and if he is right he will have to track them down and find out why they are here. The stench in the air is giving them away. Kraygoss can smell them very well, and even Mathis can smell them too. Even now Kraygoss’ hair on his back stands up and he is now smelling the ground on the hunt. Mathis skills have allowed him to stay alive and survive for a long time, and that has made it hard for him to be killed. The last thing he would want though is for his history to catch back up with him.

Then he sees a sign that says the creatures that made this trial are orcs. Nasty vile creatures that travel mostly in the dark or low light, and usually have a dark master that commands them. These creatures are blood thirsty and hideous. Mathis himself has dealt with many and fought among armies against them. Last he knew they had been mostly contained in another portion of the world, far from here, but if this was indeed an orc path then he had to find them and get some answers. The thick forest would provide enough cover for them to travel in daytime, and who knows maybe they came from one of the goblin caves and traveled to here.

It looked as though having a nice day at home was out of the question now. Mathis and Kraygoss set out to track the orc party and see to it they didn’t leave this forest. As Mathis studied the ground he could tell the orc party was small and traveled light, meaning it was a scout party. For Mathis this told him many things and knew if these orcs weren’t found and soon, many more might be coming through. Mathis’ and Kraygoss’ way of life was in danger and they had to see to it that is wasn’t changed. Both Mathis and Kraygoss traveling fast and light could catch the orc party before dark according to what Mathis was reading off of the ground. This would allow for the perfect opportunity to strike, but hopefully they weren’t returning to a fortified position as there was no way to tell. Time would soon tell if that would be the case.

The Harbinger Tales – “The Hunt Is About To Begin” Ep. (2)

The light is starting to fade and the sky is dancing with the evening colors. The evening has come to rest making the air still and heavy. The calls of the night have started to echo throughout the forest. Flowers are closing and the stars have started to brighten as night is starting to creep in. In this forest the night brings about dark creatures. It is said that at night the forest transforms to a dark forest at times, but a person does not know when this will happen. They call it a Phantom Forest and it lives and breathes as an actual being. It has even been known to create creatures out of pure darkness. These creatures create pure havoc across the land forcing armies to take them down. This forest is a mystic being in and of itself, and it takes great skill to learn of its powers.

Mathis and Kraygoss are now traveling more quickly as the dark is coming, and it is taking longer to catch the orc party than Mathis thought. The orc party is traveling faster than he is use too, but he could tell by the signs on the ground, and how Kraygoss was starting to act that soon they would be on them.

The odor in the air was starting to get thick, and Mathis knew the time to slow and create a strategy of attack had come. First, he would scout the area and determine to the best plan of attack. The light was starting to fade more quickly now and Mathis knew that speed and stealth was needed. Mathis drew his bow and three arrows, stringing one and holding the other two in the hand that held the bow. Keeping the bow taut and keeping his body bent and low to the ground, Mathis and Kraygoss moved quickly yet quietly.

The brush ahead was starting to part and Mathis could tell a clearing was about to appear, and knew that this would be a good camp for the orcs. Before moving to close Mathis checked the air to see where the wind was blowing. Orcs might be savage creatures, but like most wild animals their hunting senses were sharp and would smell them coming if they weren’t down wind. While circling they came upon a grouping of trees that were down wind and had thick brush at the base. The tree’s limbs arched over creating a canopy low to the ground. Mathis got on his knees and crawled to the edge of the brush. Glancing through the limbs of the brush he got his first glimpse of the orc party and he started to plan his and Kraygoss’ attack.

Like the mist of the evening Mathis moved about the grouping of trees finding his targets and learning their habits quickly. Mathis’ skill set was like no other and he was able to telegraph exactly how the attack was going to unfold in a manner of minutes. He determined that there was eight orcs and one in command. Their armor did not have a significant symbol as to who they followed, but he would find that out later. The clearing made a circle with a couple of rocks here and there spaced throughout. One such rock was close to edge and would allow for a great perch in which to start the attack. Opposite of that would be were Kraygoss would be hidden, ready, and waiting for Mathis to call.

Three orcs were stationed on the perimeter equally spaced and walking in a counter clock wise rotation. The rest set in the center around a fire cooking a shallow meal to eat. Five set eating their crumbs while the commander ate more and stood looking about. Three out of the nine were archers and only one of them walked the perimeter. As this was a scouting orc party their armor was slight, and would be easily pierced.

The time had come for the attack to being so Mathis moved Kraygoss to his position and told him to hold and to stay at the ready through a unique hand motion. Then silently moving back to the rocky perch he scouted earlier Mathis poised himself ready to unleash swift death. Not arousing attention, Mathis fired two arrows quickly in the ground in separate locations where they would be easily accessible during the fight. The light has all but faded to a distinct slight purple hue in the distance where the sun set, and the attack was on.

Mathis pulled out his bow and drew an arrow and started to aim directly at the commander. Sliding his fingers down the shaft to the back of the arrow, and the feathers brushing through his fingers. He hooks the string and pulls it taut and ready. At the far side of the clearing, one of the perimeter orcs was nearing Kraygoss. The air grew still and time seemed to slow. With a unique whistle that sounded as though a bird had called out Kraygoss leaped and grabbed the orc around the throat so he wouldn’t scream, and quickly pulling him back into the brush to finish him off. Right when Kraygoss jumped Mathis fired his arrow, and right when it left his hands Mathis stood and jumped off his perch. He landed right in between the two arrows he fired into the ground earlier. Grabbing the left one and firing it towards the orc on the left perimeter, and then turning suddenly grabbing the right. He fired it and hit both targets, and by now his first arrow had made contact with the orc commander.

The five orcs remaining were standing and looking around confused and trying to find out where the attack was coming from. While kneeling Mathis dropped his bow and pulled his two swords out. He looked up found his targets and with a unique whistle, which drew the attention of the orcs, called for Kraygoss to go on the attack. As the orcs raced towards Mathis he stood and raced towards them his swords gleaming in the fire’s light. Right before the first sword struck the first orc Kraygoss flew through the smoke and fire to grab the furthest orc and crushed him in his jowls. He then jumped at another. Mathis ducked under the first swinging orc and surprised the next with his sword piercing right below the ribs fallen instantly. Throwing his left hand up and blocking an incoming attack on the left, Mathis plunged his right sword into the attacker. He then pulled his left sword out and turned to face the first orc he dodged running at him now, and threw the sword catching it in his chest and stopping him in his tracks.

Mathis froze, with his hand extended from throwing the sword, replaying the fight seeing ever angle. What seemed like minutes were just seconds. Mathis knew for the attack to work it had to be fast and without mistakes. If only one orc got away their presence would then be known and surprise would no longer be Mathis and Kraygoss’ element. The fight was over and all the orcs were destroyed, but one. The first arrow that Mathis had released that was meant for the orc commander hit its target, but only marred him. The orc was wounded in the leg and had started to get up and limp away. While standing and cleaning his blades, Mathis looked at Kraygoss and said, “Go get him boy.” Mathis then turned and walked back to where he left his bow on the ground.  After Kraygoss got his command he growled and turned and ran towards the orc. The orc screamed as Kraygoss grabbed him by the thigh and carried him to where Mathis was standing by the fire now and dropped him.

The orc, which now had the use of only one leg after Kraygoss’ jaws crushed his leg bones, laid strewn on the ground fighting back death. Mathis sitting and wiping the last of the orc blood off his blade sheathed his sword. He leaned back took a deep breath and then leaned forward to ask the orc questions. Mathis stated sternly, “Who is your master orc?” The orc spitting up blood and coughing, “I’m not telling you”, the orc sputtered out. Mathis retorted, “Why are you here?” The orc did not speak. Mathis knew these questions would not give him much, so he decided to go for the more evil approach. “Fine, don’t tell me, but my friend here is hungry and I’m obliged to give him something to eat”, Mathis stated. “Do your worst”, the orc retorted. “Oh, it will not be me”, Mathis said. Mathis stood and then turned his back and said, “Kraygoss have fun.” Kraygoss who had been sitting at attention stood and walked towards the orc and started to open his mouth showing off his massive teeth. “Now Kraygoss go slow and make it last, it would be no fun to spoil your food”, Mathis said with a smile. The orc now had a panicked look as Kraygoss walked towards him teeth glaring. “Wait, I’ll tell you what you want”, the orc yelled out quickly. “Kraygoss, hold”, Mathis said quickly. “So tell”, Mathis said hastily.

The orc told of a darkness in the far west across the Shimmering Sea. The orcs had traveled by boat to the coast of the Phantom Forest to scout for an area to establish a fortress. Laying on the western edge of the Phantom Forest are some mountains that have no name for no one has every scouted them, but this is where the strong hold is being built. The orc told of a major incursion that was going to happen. The orc was a lowly scout commander and did not know when the incursion would take place, but knew the strong hold was nearly complete. Mathis knew that when that strong hold was complete that the incursion wouldn’t be too far after that.

Mathis had got what he was after and stood next to Kraygoss petting his head. The orc pleaded, “Are you going to let me live?” Mathis now standing looking into the stars saying nothing for a time, said quietly, “No.” He then walked away and as he did whistled telling Kraygoss to finish the orc. Mathis walked away with the fire at his back, and the screaming of the orc being heard, but then suddenly stopped. Mathis walked to each of the orcs he killed with an arrow and removed them. He didn’t want to leave a trace of his existence here. He knew if there was one orc scouting party then there would be more to come, and when this one didn’t check in they would be searching. He had the surprise element and wanted to keep it that way. Kraygoss had now caught up to Mathis. Mathis looked at him and said, “Good boy Kraygoss, good boy.” They were at the edge of the clearing walking through the brush and tree limbs in the dark now. He would get to a safe distance and then set camp. There he would formulate a plan on what to do next. Mathis knew going forward his life had two choices. One was he could leave and head back to his home and live out his days with Kraygoss and the life he had, or find this strong hold and try and delay this incursion somehow. With all his training he knew what the answer was. He had to attack knowing that ignoring it would only delay the eventual finding him and Kraygoss. You can’t run from your past, and so Mathis decided to fight. It was time for him to take up his swords and become the Harbinger of death again. So, Mathis and Kraygoss set out heading west deep into the Phantom Forest, and the hunt was on. The darkness of the forest enveloped the two of them like it was welcoming an old friend, and Mathis was not stirred or unnerved by the presence of this darkness that endowed the deep woods.

The Harbinger Tales – “A Journey into Darkness” Ep. (3)

The night had come full circle and had covered the forest in black. The wind was slightly blowing causing them to rattle. Owls in the dark called out searching for their next meal. In the distance wolves howled and could be heard preparing to stalk the nights prey. The crackle of the fire echoed slightly through the woods. There was no moon to show the smoke and the brush that surrounded the camp site was thick enough to hide the glow. Kraygoss lay on his side feet stretched straight out towards the fire. He was dreaming as he twitched occasionally and gave out a soft howl. Dreaming of a time he had hunted some prey for sport.

Mathis sat quietly pondering upon things he had not thought about for a long time. His past was coming back to him and it was like jumping into ice water. Long ago Mathis hunted targets and killed them without remorse. He chose the targets in which to dispatch. Orcs were his main prey, as they were the minions of The Dark One. Mathis only allied himself with the side of light. He fought in their armies, and along many great warriors. He saw death many times and it gave him a rush like no other. Overtime he became well known and even took part in the assault of the Dark Castle. Playing a key role in the siege, Mathis was one of the few warriors who helped vanquish The Dark One, but soon afterwards he lost interest in battle and death. Maybe it was because of the love he lost, or maybe he just got tired of it all.

Mathis’ mind started to leave their camp. “What brings you to our part of the world at this time of day”, the waitress asked. Her eyes caught my attention. “Sir, can I help you with anything”, she asked once again? Mathis smiled looking down at the table, “With what I do, not much help needed, but I’ll just take some ale and bread for right now”, said Mathis. “I’ll get it right to you, and if you need anything else let me know”, she said and started to walk away. “Might I get a name so that I might ask for help though if indeed I find out I need some”, asked Mathis. “Jessa”, she commented and then continued to walk away with a smile. Mathis sat back pulling out a pipe to smoke on. Relaxing one of the few times he ever had a chance to.

Finally finished and happy to have a hot meal Mathis placed his money on the table and stood to walkout, but stopped and looked at Jessa behind the counter. He looked back at the table and grabbed the money. He walked over to the counter and placed the money in front of her. “Sorry”, he said. She looked up at him and said, “For what?” “I didn’t need any help”, said Mathis. “I brought you food after you asked and kept your glass full. It would seem I helped you some”, she said. “Yeah”, said Mathis placing the money on the counter. He smiled and then walked out thanking her. She watched him leave smiling, and left wondering who he was, and if there could have been more.

Mathis walked out and when the door shut he dropped his shoulders and let out a deep breath. Looking back over his shoulder, he straightened up and then walked on off. The town he was in was small and close to a highly active area of rogue orc war bands. The Dark One scattered his minions all over the place after he was defeated. Without a leader they created their own clans and were running amuck throughout the land. The largest of the clans and most active area was not too far away. Mathis had been called in to help rid the clan of their head. If he could kill the leader then they would scatter off, most likely the rest of the orcs left would join the other clans or be killed off because they had been defeated. His specialty was getting into places that were hard to get into and dispatch foes that were are to dispatch, so he was sent for right away. His reputation was legendary, but his face not known well, and he liked it that way.

Kraygoss laid quietly in the dark alley. Hidden and sleeping as the villagers wouldn’t take to kindly to wild beast as they would like to call him, though would have even considered him one. Mathis went over to him and sat down next to him. It was winter now and snow as about, but it was not sticking to the area that they were in. The wind blew some and it would make you pull your jacket in a little tighter. Kraygoss was made for cold and gave off warmth. As Mathis sat next to him it was like sitting next to a fire with a warmth of comfort. He pulled some meat out of his pack to give to him, and he perked up at the smell and tasty morsel. Light chatter and song could be heard from the tavern, as well as in the streets, but it was a quiet night. Many soldiers were in the town, and it saw many come and go throughout the day. Mathis was just waiting it time out for when it was right to move on and continue the hunt for his target.

Suddenly there was scream, and then glass and wood broke. A growl came from Kraygoss, but Mathis, with a hand gesture kept him still and quiet. A roar went up and then the eyes of the enemy could be seen from the few lit light of the street. Orcs were upon the town. Mathis pulled back into the alley and Kraygoss followed. He was planning on a better vantage point to get involved in this raid, but was cut off from existing from the back end of the alley. Three orcs started to walk by the alley and stopped, they smelled the air and looked down the alley. The meat left that Mathis had given Kraygoss was still on the ground. The Orcs stepped forward in the alley and bent over to grab the leftovers, but heard a growl. They froze and looked down the alley. Kraygoss stepped forward and the torches the orcs held started to showcase something large and mean in front of them. They growled back and started to move backwards, then there was a sound of a sword being drown.

With a short crisp whistle Kraygoss lounged and caught one of the orcs the others screamed and fell backwards. One stood and went to strike Kraygoss as tore his prey apart, but just as he swung it’s blade was stopped bouncing him backwards. Mathis stepped forward and reading his swords. Mathis and Kraygoss might not be well known amongst his people, but orcs knew him and feared the duo. The last of the orc ran in fear. Mathis looked about checking the area seeing what to take on next. The night hide much, but the attackers were caring torches allowing for easy targets. Mathis was curious as to who was leading this attack and had a notion as to who. Looking at the corpse of one of the dead orcs he found what he was looking for. There was a brand on his back that told him that it was the chieftain that he was called in to kill. Now he was on the hunt. This kind of brash attack was not going to be led by just anyone. Problem was the orc that got away was no doubt heading straight toward the leader and telling him that he was there. He would retreat immediately fearing Mathis. “Kraygoss, track”, said Mathis. Kraygoss smelt the ground where the last orc stood and then leapt forward in the street and looked around smelling the air. He turned and growled looking to the right. The chieftain was standing right at the end of the street. He was holding the neck of the one orc that had ran. Mathis stepped out and looked out down the street. The orc looked up and his face turned shocked. “Well that wasn’t hard”, said Mathis.

Just then Jessa stepped out of the tavern running from an orc. Mathis uncharacteristically froze at the sight of her. Without hesitation he ran forward. Kraygoss followed leaping at another orc running out as well. Mathis met the closet orc to her and through his sword through him while grabbing his hand and keeping it from slashing it at Jessa. As he through the lifeless body on the ground he looked down at Jessa and then suddenly he felt a pain in his right side. Stepping back he looked down and saw an arrow sticking out. Looking up the chieftain was smiling and walking away. Mathis went to chase him, but felt a hand grab his left hand. He stopped and looked down. Jessa was looking at him in tears. “Please don’t, your hurt”, she said. Jim looked back towards where the Chieftain ran away. He started to pull away, but she said, “Let me help you.” He stopped trying to walk away and helped her up. She looked at his side and then at him. “Don’t worry I’ve had worse”, said Mathis. “Maybe I want to worry”, she replied. “I don’t want you to”, he said. She stood looking into his eyes. “Have you ever let someone”, she asked? He did not respond.

“Come on, we need to get off the street and inside”, said Mathis. They walked back into the tavern and blocked the door. Mathis held his side and walked around checking all the windows and the back door. The orcs were starting to scatter about as the chieftain had fled seeing Mathis. The other soldiers in the town were starting to finally get things under control and it was calming.

“Come sit and take off your jacket”, Jessa said. Mathis did not argue and went to her. He looked down at the arrow and then at her, “Can you take it out?” “It will be difficult, but I might be able to manage. We don’t have the best healer, but he would be better. I know a little”, said Jessa. “Then get the cloths ready”, said Mathis. “Why”, asked Jessa. Just then Mathis pushed on the arrow and forced it through the back side. He broke the back part of the arrow off and then pulled the rest of the through. “Oh, that’s why”, said Jessa.

She dressed his wound the best she could till the army healer showed up and finished the job.

The captain of the army showed and talked to Mathis for a bit then left. “So, you have to leave”, asked Jessa? “Let’s just say I have some unfinished business”, said Mathis. “Well, be careful”, said Jessa. Mathis smiled and walked out. She stood still watching as he left. Walking over to a table in the tavern she sat, and then started to cry. The emotion of what had happen was catching her, and something else had her stirred. She buried her bloody hands in her face and bent over. Just then a hand touched her shoulder. She looked up and Mathis was looking down at her. He knelt and then said, “Thanks for helping me.” She smiled and laughed then leaned forward quickly kissing him then releasing. Mathis shocked smiled back, “Be here when I get back. This won’t take long.”

The fire gave off a light glow of warmth as a log crackled and then broke sending small embers into the air. Mathis shook himself, freeing his mind to be clear and focused. He and Kraygoss were away from the orc encampment he destroyed, their camp was far enough away and in a safe location as to not draw attention if another orc scouting party came by. The night seemed darker than usual and the air still and heavy. His senses becoming more heightened as he focused on the battle. It all had slowed time for Mathis and he saw everything clearly. He had almost forgotten the thrill of the fight and adventure. His blood was pumping and he once again felt the rush that only battle and death bring. He was calm and completely in control of his mind. His thoughts turned to what was going to be the next move. He knew that going to the orc fortress would take at least two days. He was going to have to get some provisions before leaving, meaning a trip back to his home before heading out.

Mathis’ mind was completely focused on the orcs that he had destroyed. It troubled him that they were here. Orcs had not been seen since the Great War with The Dark One. No one had seen any evidence of them since the war had ended. This forest, The Phantom Forest, was once the orcs Dark Lands. It is said that once The Dark One was vanquished the orcs themselves vanished and were never seen again. Orc war parties roamed the lands doing The Dark One’s biding. Battles that were fought with them saw great bloodshed and death. They are a ruthless bunch of monsters, blood thirsty, and savages. Lead by which ever orcs were the strongest and the most ruthless. To win the war the Armies of Light had to first defeat the orc armies.

It is in the transcripts that the Armies of Light had pushed the orcs back to their lands and surrounded them. As the Armies of Light kept them at bay a few special warriors and small force attacked The Dark Castle and they were able to destroy The Dark One. As The Dark One was about to fall he yelled out some words of his own tongue. No one knew what they meant, but it is said that storms grew over the dark lands. Black Lighting flung down striking the ground and hitting the orcs. The orcs scattered but could not get away. Soon all the orcs laid dead with the ground stained in their blood. The Armies of Light stood shocked and confused as to what was happening. Soon the ground started to shake and from the blood stained ground a dark purple haze started to raise and soon trees with dark bark and black leaves started to arise. Soon all the Dark Lands where transformed into this dark forest.

The Armies of Light decided that this forest was cursed and not to be entered. Scouting encampments were engineered on the perimeter to keep a watchful eye on the forest. It was soon discovered this forest had dark powers that created evil creatures, and once created sent them forth from the forest to attack and destroy. These Phantoms of the Forest, as they came to be known, attacked on random, and were different beings every time. The forest however did not always create these creatures. At times the forest seemed normal and calm, but at times it changed and its creations of darkness spewed forth. This caused the Armies of Light to call it The Phantom Forest.

Soon after the first attacks small out posts stationed at safe distances that could see the entire perimeter now kept watch of the forest. They watch for the times in which these phantom beings will once again spew forth. It has been a long time now since an attack has happened. Mathis himself decided it would be wise for someone to be on the inside ever watching. So, he made the decision to live in The Phantom Forest. He wanted to be away from everyone, but be ever watchful. He made his encampment in a place he found to be less active than most, but could still have darkness arise. A few times he had to defend his home from dark creatures that tried to kill him. These attacks are part of what allowed Mathis to find Kraygoss, as no beings nor beast were safe from these deadly dark creatures.

Mathis looked into the small fire, it now glowing less as it needed more wood, setting legs crossed on the ground and arms crossed keeping the warmth in his body. He stood and walked over to a pile of wood to add more. Kraygoss jumped being startled by his movements looked about and then stood. He yawned, then stretched, turned and then laid over again this time with his back facing the fire. After throwing the wood on the fire Mathis once again sat looking into the fire.

It troubled him that these orcs were once again among the living. If they were here then that must mean that The Dark One was somehow still alive. “Why else would these dark creatures be here in this forest”, Mathis sat thinking to himself. Mathis knew no others knew of their existence, and that if gone unchecked then the orcs would have an advantage when they decided to attack. Mathis needed to know what was going on in the west. At first light Mathis decided he and Kraygoss would set forth to their home to gather their needed provisions. Mathis glanced up at the stars and then laid back with his hands behind his head. He knew that this was about to be a big adventure, and some part of him was happy that he was on it. To be back in a battle and once again have the rush of destroying an enemy. Mathis was at ease and calm as he thought of what had to be done. Needing rest he closed his eyes and soon fell asleep. With Kraygoss laying by him on the ground he knew he was safe from any attackers. At first light they would set forth and an adventure would soon be under way for them. Mathis would jump at the opportunity to once again be on an adventure and soon he and Kraygoss would be. The fire crackled lightly as both Mathis and Kraygoss slept under the night sky. If the orcs were back that also meant that this forest might soon be awakening to once again create its dark creatures. This world could soon have darkness upon it, but only time would tell.

The Harbinger Tales – “The Path of The Unknown” Ep. (4)

Morning birds could be heard and the light of a new day was just starting to fade the dark away. The smoke of the night fire was slowly stirring in its remains. A fog had rolled in and everything was hazed. The coolness of the morning had set in creating a chill in the air. The echo of an elk bugling could be heard throughout the forest. Overhead a crow called out soaring by. The air was still and heavy, and the wind was dead as not even a leaf was moving.

Kraygoss was already up hunting for his breakfast. The area was rich in rabbits and Kraygoss had his eyes on one shuffling around. Crouched behind a small clump of bushes Kraygoss waited patiently for that right moment to pounce. The rabbit was unaware of what was about to happen. Suddenly, Kraygoss jumped and was on top of him. Within minutes he tore the rabbit to pieces and ate what he desired. Once done he walked back over to the camp site and laid down. He proceeded to lick his paws and lips cleaning what blood was left over. Kraygoss was in good spirts and satisfied with his morning food though he could eat more.

Mathis was now squatting over the fire stirring the coals and stuffing out the fire. After that he grabbed a small amount of food to eat out of his pack. The food was some of the fruit he had picked a couple of days back. It filled him and helped in any weariness felt. He then started to roll up his mat he slept on. Mathis was quiet and focused. Quickly and proficiently gathering his belongings so that they could get on the move. He stopped once to reach over and pet the head of Kraygoss and feed him a snack as well as slipping in some of the fruit to help him to.

The path of the unknown is always a risky venture. Mathis knew this better than most as his history has always taught him to be prepared for the unknown. This situation was particularly risky as he had no back up to help out. This was going to be his venture and his alone. The road was going to be long and dangerous, but if he could pull it off then he might be able to warn the armies of light of an impending incursion. The time had come, so Kraygoss and Mathis set off first to home to get supplies and then west to the orc fortress.

The run back to his home didn’t take too long. By the time they arrived it still wasn’t time for lunch. Mathis first walked into his house and grabbed a larger pack to carry his belongings. He traded out his smaller camp role for a larger one so that when they did camp it would be more comfortable. He then grabbed assorted foods to take with him that were filling, but small and easy to cook if needed. He grabbed what special fruit he thought would help him on his journey making sure to put the newer gatherings away for storing, and grabbing the older storing’s before they ruined. He got enough that it satisfied him for his journey ahead.

He walked out set the pack and bed roll on the table outside, and then went over to his forge to gather some necessary armaments. In the forge Mathis had created a pack to which to attach to Kraygoss. This would allow Mathis to carry four times the amount of belongings. Grabbing some more arrows to carry and even some arrow heads and feathers to make arrows if needed. Mathis could find the wood necessary to make the shaft of the arrows easily enough, but the arrow heads and feathers would be a little harder to come by. He then proceeded to adorn himself in some light armor. Things were going to get a little bit more uncertain then attacking a light scouting orc party and so Mathis was coming prepared.

Mathis knew that the weight of the pack that Kraygoss was going to carry could hold a lot and that Kraygoss would barely feel it. He therefore packed some armor that was heavier in case things called for a more direct approach and protection was key. Mathis packed a few more things needed in case he needed to do a quick repair. The Kraygoss pack was very versatile and could even be expanded once taken off of Kraygoss and formed into a lean to for shelter against rain. This trip was going to take some time so it would prove to be a viable piece of gear for Mathis and Kraygoss. As the pack was able to carry things for Mathis is also forged a bit of armor for Kraygoss being able to take arrow hits.

Moving onto weapons Mathis already had his to swords he fought with and carried always. One was just long enough to be considered a two handed sword, but Mathis trained himself to be able to fight with it using only one hand. If needed he could pull out just this one and fight, but if things got a little hairy he then would pull out a second. His second was a short sword that was slightly thicker than most but still possessed a fine cutting ability. It primary purpose was to help aid in blocking incoming strikes, but it still capable of landing a striking blow if needed. Being lighter in size, Mathis could handle it more swiftly even throwing it with precision. Mathis was trained to use both swords together and when he did he turned them into a deadly combination. When using the blades Mathis fought as though he was an avalanche striking everything and leaving nothing. He was precise and quick. His motions were smooth, fluent, quick, and his hits deadly.

Mathis’ capabilities with a bow were just as dangerous, and from a distance enemies would not know what hit them. He had the innate ability to track a target and let his arrow fly catching them in stride in some cases. Mathis became well known through the great war. He was the one called when a high value target was needed for dispatching, and so he was called the Harbinger and he brought death to his enemies. He took it upon himself to take on missions requiring stealth, precision, and almost certain death. These missions were almost suicide for any other person taking them on, but Mathis always achieved his goal and returned to once again take on another. He astonished and became well respected among the armies of light. To some degree he even frightened some, as he seemed unstoppable. Mathis never wanted fame or fortune from his abilities. He sought only to destroy the evil in Nelbring and one day live a life of peace, but as long as The Dark One and his armies were alive he was not going to. Mathis’ mind again started to wonder about as he finished preparing. The Dark One was gone and Mathis did try to take on a normal life, but he first had a mission to complete and then, maybe then he could see what that felt like.

The orc that had wounded him was still at large and he had a mission to silence him forever. However, this mission felt different in many ways. This person, this girl, was in his thoughts. Her words rang in his head over and over again. For once in his life Mathis was unsure and confounded. What was this feeling that was coming over him? He had a longing to be with her, but why. He had never felt this way ever. He had to compose himself and place his mind back on the mission at hand. Could it be possible to have a normal life, “What is a normal life”, said Mathis to himself? He had been fighting for so long that he had forgotten what or how one went. Her face was in his mind and he saw her so clear and freely.

As Mathis was riding, this time not alone as some of the company wanted to ride along to get back at the orc who ambushed them in the town, he was touched on the shoulder.

“Mathis”, a voice called out. Mathis looked to his left. “Everything okay”, said a man on horseback. “I believe so Daradan”, Mathis said. “Are you sure you seem distracted, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen you distracted”, Daradan said. Mathis did not reply. “Well, what is it then, speak up. I really don’t want to go in to battle, with the deadliest man alive and he’s distracted”, said Daradan. “When it comes to battle, I will not be distracted”, said Mathis. Daradan pulled up on his reins and moved to the right of Mathis. “I would say that is true, but this would say otherwise”, said Daradan nodding his head towards Mathis’ wound. Mathis Placed his hand on the wound then removed it, “It’s fine”, he said. “Yeah, but it wasn’t a wound made by fighting in a battle”, said Daradan. Mathis went to say something, but Daradan stopped him, “Oh, come on. That strike wouldn’t have caught you on any other day, and you know it. So, what is going on?”

Daradan was probably one of the only ones that could talk to Mathis this way, and was one of the few that even talked to Mathis a person talks to a friend. They had been in the same battles many of times, and Mathis had helped him out in many missions. Daradan was a company commander in the human army. His company specialized in more silent missions that dealt in behind enemy line movements. They gathered information on enemy movements and positions. They also dealt in assassination, and this is where Mathis came into being.

Mathis was called out on a mission by order of the highest ranking general when even Daradan’s men couldn’t get even close to a high valued target. Daradan and his men were not pleased to have some outsider coming in to do their job, but it was not their call. Mathis cared little for what they thought and was there to do the job that was ordered, and he did the job with ease. Daradan’s men were still bitter, but saw a man that was a freak to them. They feared him and the beast that walked with him, which on they feared more though, walked on two feet. However, Daradan did not fear Mathis. After he completed the mission he was impressed and grateful. He had already lost some men trying to get it done, and saw Mathis save his men’s life and probably his own as well. He respected the man and the beast. In fact Daradan is one of the only people in the world that could walk up to Kraygoss and pet him freely. Any other person would be one arm short. After that mission Mathis was called one more times for other hard targets, but it wasn’t a general that was doing the calling, Daradan was. He saw a man that had the will and tools to get the job done and save lives in the process. Even his men started to slowly come around to the point that they at least respected him. Through the years and even on this mission Daradan tried to keep Mathis close. Mathis even came to respect Daradan and enjoy his company as well. This mission was no different, but Mathis was different. A mystery as he was when he first came on to the scene. A mystery people knew nothing about.

Much is not known of Mathis’ back ground, as it is clouded in mystery. No one knew of what race he was created from. Mathis’ own mind was clouded to any of his history before The Dark One. Though speculation was all about as to what he was. The one whisper that surfaced the most was that he was of an ancient race from the Predorn Age, a time before The Dark One. Mathis did not care for the whispers nor give much thought to it. He had lived a long time and seen enough evil in the world to want to end it, and all that matter for him currently was what was ahead for him and Kraygoss. The past was behind him and he was determined to vanquish whatever evil was before him. Mathis looked to a time that he and Kraygoss would be able to have that peace he sought. Though apart of Mathis always enjoyed the thrill of the hunt.

Mathis refocused himself and finished packing then walked out to call upon Kraygoss. Giving out a whistle he called Kraygoss over and began to strap on the pack. Once the pack was on secure Kraygoss shook a little bit to adjust it and make it more comfortable. Mathis checked all the gear once more and the straps once again, looked at Kraygoss and said, “Let us be off my friend.” Mathis walked over to the table grabbed his pack and hooked one strap over his head sitting it on his right shoulder and letting the other ride under his left arm. With everything in hand Mathis and Kraygoss set out right before noon. They traveled swift and without haste. Time was of the essence and it was up to them to find out what darkness lay in the west, and if need be put an end to it. It was going to be no easy task, but if there was anyone capable it would be the Harbinger. Mathis and Kraygoss soon were on the path of the unknown. Their new adventure had begun.

The Harbinger Tales – “The Chaos of Evil” Ep. (5)

The rush of wind blew through the woods. Leaves, limbs, and brush moved to the ever moving air. It was right in the middle of the afternoon with the sun right past its high point. The heat of the sun warmed the day and the forest floor. At this time nothing was still and everything was in motion. The trees danced effortlessly while swaying back and forth. It was a dry afternoon, but darkness was starting to loom as the forest was coming to life as it had before.

Quick footsteps were moving through the woods. Swift and quick movements as both Mathis and Kraygoss hastily moved upon the forest floor. Sweeping past tree limbs bending and dodging and never losing a step and always moving quietly like water in a stream never stopping and constantly flowing. Kraygoss moved like air as all his body was in motion creating the slightest movements to move around and under objects of the forest floor. Their speed was constant and their motions fluid. The two of them had been together for a long time and they could read off each other and keep pace together.

They came upon a small stream that was shallow enough to cross. Mathis stopped to rest for a bit and take a quick drink. Kraygoss with tongue out and ready to still keep running was standing at the water’s edge looking across and then back at Mathis. He was ready to keep going, but was waiting on the word of Mathis to go.  Mathis looked over at him and said, “Take a break Kraygoss.” Kraygoss settled some and then lowered his head to drink. As Mathis was resting he was also in deep thought about their next move. The evening would soon be here and soon the dark, but there was something else that Mathis was also thinking about. Things in the forest were changing and as they moved farther west the darkness of old that controlled the forest was awakening once again. Mathis knew that things were about to change.

Mathis set back and looked across the stream. It was about one hundred and fifty feet wide and waste deep. The water was flowing steadily, but not strong enough to pull man nor beast downstream. What Mathis saw wasn’t the stream in front of him, but what was across the stream. The forest was turning dark and had a dark aura forming around it. The Phantom Forest’s dark power was starting to come back to life and soon its dark creatures would be alive. Mathis knew they had to hurry and reach the orc fortress and put an end to them, or whatever was causing the darkness to return. He was almost certain that the orcs were behind this and were the ones awakening the forest once again. He knew if the forest was fully awoken the creatures it created would be hard for them to fight against.

Mathis leaned over and took a hand full of water and splashed into his face and wiped it off. He then stood wiped his hand off and looked over at Kraygoss who was now sitting on his hind legs just staring across the stream into the forest. Mathis could tell he could sense the evil that was across the stream. Mathis took his pack off and held it high and started to enter the water. Taking careful steps as to not slip and fall under the water. As the shore grew closer to Mathis he started to see the forest transform. Mathis started to see a purple haze forming. Slowly swirling at the base of the trees and bushes. Mathis was almost across the water and he noticed as he got closer the purple haze started to grow. The sky started to turn dark and the trees started to turn black. It was the dark magic that was taking over, and Mathis was passing through the purple haze to the other side. He finally crossed and reached the shore. He turned and saw that the purple haze had formed a fog that blocked out the sight to the other shore. Mathis could not see across but knew Kraygoss was waiting and would be able to hear him. He whistled and after a few moments saw Kraygoss paddling across. Soon he was across and stood on the shore shaking off the water that was on him, and happy to have a cool bath.

Mathis was on one knee looking at the ground that had turn to a murky purplish black. It reminded him of the blood of orc and he remembered the history of the forest. He remembered how the orc army was destroyed by black lighting from the sky and that the ground became stained with orc blood. This blood was cursed and it was the source of the dark magic that ruled this forest. Things had changed now, and the journey ahead would be much more dangerous. He looked up and into the forest breathing deeply, and focusing all his senses as to what they had before them. He looked over at Kraygoss who was sitting on his hind legs and walked over to him knelled down and touched his head to his. “It’s time to go in to the dark Kraygoss, are you with me”, Mathis asked. Kraygoss licked Mathis’ face and the both stood side by side looking into the forest. Both seemed as to be thinking the same thing. They knew the adventure ahead was going to be hard and long.

They started moving slowly and quietly keeping their senses on high alert for anything that they might find. Mathis and Kraygoss had been walking all afternoon through the dark forest. The forest was quieter than what they were used to. There were no birds singing and the other usual creatures were nowhere to be seen. The sky was dark and the purplish black fog was blotting out the sun making it hard to keep the time, but through his training and capabilities he could keep up with how long they had been traveling. Suddenly, Kraygoss stopped frozen in place. Mathis stopped and crouched down behind some close brush. He slowly grabbed his bow and an arrow stringing it at the ready.

Watching Kraygoss closely, who was off to the right of where Mathis was in cover, Mathis watched his ears and head to see if he saw or heard something coming. Soon Kraygoss turned his head and ears slightly to the left and focused in on that direction. Mathis peered through the brush to see what was there. The fog started to gather in a single location and then started to give off a light of a dark presence. It was active and transforming.  Then something caught Mathis’ ears. He started to hear the black tongue speech something he had not heard in a long time. The last time was in the dark fortress as The Dark One fell. He stared into the fog and saw what looked like eyes floating above it. Soon the Fog formed a round mass. Four strands suddenly spewed forth and hit the ground. The mass was turning into one of the phantom creatures as it started to crawl forth, and a head started to form on one end. It suddenly stood on two strands and feet started to form.

Mathis called out to Kraygoss and he ran over to his side. The creature was now starting to take full form. The creature was standing over 10 feet tall. Built like a troll but in a constant blood rage. Mathis drew his swords and prepared to attack as the creature was now alive and its glowing eyes had found them. It started to walk forward raising its hand to attack. Mathis quickly pointed to the right and Kraygoss ran circling the creature from behind as it focused in on Mathis. Mathis charged the creature head on. As it raised its hand and arms in the air to smash him, Mathis slid under the phantom, and as he did he swung each sword on each leg’s inner thigh. The swords struck true and the creature roared out loudly. Just then as it was roaring in pain Kraygoss came from behind and bit its ankle. Kraygoss held on and started to pull it taking its leg out from underneath it. The phantom fell on its back and Mathis turned after sliding and ran back towards the creature reversing his swords in each hand. Jumping on top of the creature and thrusting his swords into its chest. He then jumped off to the right and turned and rolled his swords back upright.

Kraygoss was at the ready on the opposite side waiting to see if the creature would get back up. It rolled to the left and put its right hand on its chest that was now in pain. Pushing up with its left hand it started to raise. The blow had wounded the creature deeply, but wasn’t down yet. Mathis sheathed his swords and grabbed his bow and two arrows stringing one arrow at the ready. As the creature started to show his back left shoulder to Mathis he drew his arrow and fired it. He then immediately started to run a circle to the front of the creature. The arrow struck the creature and it through its head up in the air backwards in pain arching its back, and that was the opening Mathis was waiting for. While running the circle he had already strung the other arrow and had pulled it to the ready. When the creature’s head was all the way back he let his arrow loose. It struck the creature right in its lower jaw piercing all the way into its head. It didn’t even let out a roar and just fell into a lump on the ground.

The phantom creature was dead and wasn’t going to do anything else. Mathis stood next to it and examined its remains. He noticed that it started to decay right away. In a few moments it would soon be completely gone. Once the creature was dead the dark magic was gone. Mathis also knew that this wasn’t the strongest creature this forest had created. He had seen the terrible destruction some of these creature had created in Nelbring before. He knew that this was only the start of something terrifying. Kraygoss and he needed to get to the orc fortress and destroy them. What worried Mathis the most was the dark tongue that was being spoke just before the creature was created. Mathis knew who it was that created it. Whether he was back or not, his dark magic was still alive and feeding this forest. He had to find out if The Dark One was still alive, or something else was controlling the forest. Mathis and Kraygoss gathered themselves and started once again to the west. Their journey was only going to get more dangerous from here and time now was getting more important. The body of the creature fell back into mist and as it did the glowing eyes separated and flew off.  Mathis knew that those were the evil trinks that created that being. Trinks were an issue that Mathis had hope he wouldn’t have to deal with, but figured they would at one point appear. Not much trouble, but irritating none the less. They created monsters to catch their prey, the more of them that combined the more terrifying the creature they could produce. Most of the time they fought among themselves, making them pretty useless, but the Darklord would mass them together to produce some rather impressively terrifying creatures. Mathis and Kraygoss moved on keeping steady and slow. Moving too fast through the woods could enact and psychosis. The dark mist was maddening to the untrained and took years to conquer, and many men were lost to its powers. Mathis on the other hand conquered it by training himself, but the effects could still be felt. Kraygoss was immune to the effects. A beast that always helped Mathis stay straight and was a tie down to what he needed. It would seem that this was going to be a good test on how his training had held up.

The Harbinger Tales – “A Clouded Nightmare” Ep. (6)

The night had now engulfed the forest. The forest that was known was gone and now the Phantom Forest had risen once again. A creature in the distance howled, but like no wolf of this earth. The trees creaked ominously and echoed through the forest as they did. Whispers could be heard as the wind slightly blew by, and the ever feeling of being watched loomed over the forest. The air felt heavier and it seemed as though your soul was being tugged on. This was a place of nightmares and dark creatures that loomed everywhere. To venture here almost meant certain doom.

Mathis looked to the sky and saw the moon, but it was not the normal moon he was used to seeing. The light that now shown from it was of the blackish purple hue from the fog floating all around. The fog itself gave off a faint purplish glow as the dark magic flowed through it. Mathis sat with his legs crossed on the ground. There was no fire this night as it was not safe to have one. The forest was now alive, and if Mathis were to start a fire than the fire would draw the dark force to them. Kraygoss laid behind Mathis curled slightly around him giving warmth to Mathis as he sat on the ground. Kraygoss was practically better at giving off warmth than any fire would. With a double coat of fur and thick skin, his body generated plenty of heat to keep Mathis warm even in the Highland Mountains.

Mathis continued to sit looking at the sky. His mind fast reviewing what had thus far transpired. Orcs were once again back in Nelbring, the Phantom Forest was awakening once again, and it had already started to form Phantom creatures. Everything that they had experienced so far, pointed to the fact that The Dark One had returned somehow, but the dark fortress was under the control of the Keeper now. Mathis knew there was something missing to this, and the only way to find out was to reach the orc fortress that was being built in the west. For now however Mathis and Kraygoss needed to rest and prepare for whatever was ahead of them. The journey would still take a few more days and that still depended upon if they didn’t run into any more trouble.

Mathis leaned back against Kraygoss, who by now was fast asleep, and slightly twitched when doing so. He folded his arms and extended his leg and crossed them. Lowering his head Mathis fell vast asleep effortlessly as though extremely tired. Soon Mathis was dreaming and it seemed just as real as if he were awake. The night moved slowly around them and the dark haze was all around them pulsing purplish light.

Mathis awoke to find himself and Kraygoss still seating in the dark. Looking he saw that the moon was gone and knew the night was over, but the fog had grown strong enough to blot out the sun’s light. This was something an orc coveted as they moved better and faster under the cover of darkness. Mathis stood and gathered their belongings to once again start moving to the west. He turned and noticed that Kraygoss was still asleep and thought to himself that maybe they were working too hard, but the though crossed his mind that this was unlike him as he is usually easy to wake and always wants to do something.  Waking Kraygoss they both arose and started to move westward once again. Tired or not they needed to get a move on and reach the fortress.

The day was moving along slowly and ever step seemed harder than the last. Mathis started to think maybe he too had been working too hard. Still pushing on and moving further and further into the forest Mathis was not going to stop. While Mathis was walking suddenly he felt himself get pulled over and almost fall. Stopping and shaking his head to clear himself Mathis kept walking. Looking over at Kraygoss he noticed something was off on him to. He didn’t seem to move naturally as to what Mathis was used to seeing. Just as he was starting to feel something weird in his head he heard a noise in the distance that caused him to suddenly forget all and focus on what was ahead.

The noise he heard was the snap of a twig. Something was moving ahead of them and trying to keep in cover. Mathis squatted and walked forward, and then looked over at Kraygoss and whistled to him to get down. Kraygoss moved forward to a group of bushes and then laid down behind them. Mathis was confused because it seemed as though Kraygoss was not listening to him. None the less he was at the ready and so was Mathis. They sat and waited a bit to see what would come out from hiding.

Soon through the haze four orcs walked out fully armored and armed with two handed swords. These orcs were no scouting party, these were legion orcs. These orcs fought directly for The Dark One, and they bore the insignia of him. Mathis drew his swords, everything was coming together and he saw what he needed to know. The Dark One was back and he had a chance to make a primitive strike. Mathis waited breathing heavy as though he had already been fighting. Something seemed wrong, but now was not the time to think about it. The time had come to end these vile creatures.

The orcs moved together side by side closing in closer to Mathis and Kragoss. Mathis was now about to jump out and attack just as the orcs passed by, but as he was getting ready to jump he felt himself once again get pulled except this time he fell. The noise that was made by him falling startled the orcs and they turned towards Mathis and rushed towards him. Mathis whistled for Kraygoss to attack, but Kraygoss was gone. Shocked and confused he refocused and jumped up and blocked the first striking orc. After blocking him he turned his swords towards the second and third orc. Just as the orcs were getting ready to swing their swords Mathis was getting ready to block, but just then once again he started to fill the pull. This time the pull completely took him off his feet and he fell hard. Stunned from the fall and completely confused, when his focus came back he looked up and saw the orcs above him about to drive their swords into him. Just then Mathis was pulled again just as they stabbed. He felt a sharp pain and everything went black.

Everything was black and weird sounds started to echo slightly. Mathis started to slowly open his eyes. They were extremely heavy and it was hard to move his limbs. The only thing that was going through Mathis’ mind was where he was, and what happen to Kraygoss? Mathis was trying his hardest now to move and get his eyes open to see around him. Just then he felt a pull of his sleeve and his arm being pulled. After it stopped he felt something wet on his face. He started to come to, but everything was blurry. He started to see a large object moving in front of him and once again went back to the four orcs that they found. He started to reach for his swords when the objected in front of him let out a loud howl. Mathis immediately stopped moving and sat still. He reached his hands out and said, “Kraygoss?” Mathis felt a head of fur touch his hand and then lick it. Mathis reached forward and hugged Kraygoss as the nightmare was now over.

It was now dawn and the fog had retreated some from them and Mathis was starting to get his wits about him. He could now see clearly and had started a fire to get some remedies made. He had pulled out some of the fruit he picked close to his home. With some fresh water and the fire, Mathis brewed them and created a remedy to heal him. While brewing Mathis thought back to what had happen to him. Remembering how tired he felt and how easily he and Kraygoss fell asleep there had to be something in the air that put them to sleep. It then created a dream like state that felt real. Mathis’ only true question was what would have happened had the orc’s blades connected. Would he have lived or died? He did feel soreness and there were slight cuts on him from where the orcs stabbed. This forest was a nightmare in every way. Even the very air was tainted with black magic. Hopefully this brew with the fruit would fix his ailments, and keep him and Kraygoss from falling under anymore of this tainted air.

Kraygoss wasn’t effected by the fog and for Mathis that is what saved him. Kraygoss was awake and could tell something was effecting Mathis. He was the one pulling him in his dream. Kraygoss was trying to wake up Mathis and to break the spell that was over him. Every time Mathis felt himself getting pulled in his dream, it was Kraygoss trying to wake him by pulling or pushing him in the real world. At first the dream state was so strong it didn’t affect him too much, but through persistence Kraygoss was able to wake Mathis enough to break the spell.

After a few hours Mathis was on his feet and the feeling of being tired and the heaviness of the air was gone. Kraygoss was up and ready to go as well excited to have Mathis back to his original form. They gathered their things and this time headed out with their heads on right and their focus set straight. They were back on the move heading west and even though the dream Mathis had wasn’t real his motivation was doubled. He wanted to beat this forest and the being controlling it. The one thing that did bother Mathis about all of this, was the fact that Mathis and Kraygoss were being attacked. It seemed that maybe Mathis and Kraygoss were not as unknown as he might have thought. Maybe whatever was at the center of all of this knew that they were in the forest and heading their way. Soon they would be at the source and would be able to tell themselves. Mathis learned that day that there was nothing in this forest that was safe and to be prepared for anything. If something was watching them then Mathis had a warning for it, and that was for it to be prepared for anything, because The Harbinger of Death was coming for it. Mystery abound this forest for Mathis, it also seemed different than it was last time he visited it. Something else was itching at the back of his neck. This feeling of dread and darkness, but different than the Darkness that once kept a death grip on the lands. This forest had a history as the longest held area that was controlled in darkness. It was marked, maybe tainted by that previous being, but there was something familiar to it. At this point he kept it in the back of his head. It was a light spark in the darkness there. At one point it was going to start to burn brighter, he just needed to get some kindling to add to it. The one thing Mathis had learned through his many years was time. It was always present and never yielding. He had learned to ride time. Sit back and let time do its part. Planning was something he was used to, and most well laid plans had to have patients and time. Hoping it would never come to be, Mathis chose to live in the forest fearing that one day this would be something he would have to do. There was a small part of him that wished that he wouldn’t have to every step in the harbinger role once more. Never again after long ago, but the itch and raw energy that accompanied him in this role, gave him a jolt. Something he missed, and it surprised him.

The Harbinger Tales – “A Cold Entrance” Ep. (7)

It is getting colder and the terrain is starting to be rockier. The air is growing cooler and thinner. Rain is now falling clearing the fog somewhat, but it is ever present, morphing and changing things all around. The mountains are growing nearer and soon snow will be falling. The creatures of the forest have all disappeared as there is now a silence that grabs at your very soul. Nothing seems alive not even the plants or trees. This place has become like death itself.

With the rain Mathis and Kraygoss were not trying to stay in cover but instead using a moment they thought wouldn’t be available to them again. The rain had weakened the fogs power and so the air was cleaner and easier to breath. Though both Mathis and Kraygoss were eating the fruit and it was keeping them safe, the air was still thick and hard to breathe before the rain. The journey had taken its toll and fatigue was setting in. The rain brought a reprieve to the journey that was both much needed and refreshing. Clearing the air gave Mathis and Kraygoss a quicker step and they were both moving as if they were lighter. Though the rain would eventually stop and they would have the fog rolling back in, Mathis and Kraygoss moved less hindered without the malevolent fog.

Taking a moment to gather their breath and to scout a tree to climb, Mathis wanted to check the surroundings and see what the area was like. They had traveled far enough west that he could see the mountains of the Phantom Forest piercing the fog and was untouched by its evil force. Mathis found a tree that would do what he needed, and so began the climb to the Top. Kraygoss waited at the bottom sitting on his hind legs and looking up with curiosity as to what Mathis was doing. Mathis reached the top and looked at a most majestic site. As far as the eyes could see were tree tops and nothing else. All else was hidden in the cover of the fog looming around. The sun was heading down and was gleaming off the blanket of fog that had formed.

Mathis looked all around trying to get their bearings. To the east there was nothing but fog and the slight evidence of tree tops every once in a while popping out. To the north and the south the same. To the west Mathis could see the tall mountains and was glad to see that the fog had not engulfed them as of yet, but knew the journey through them would be hazardous as well. Al the mountains in Nelbring hide creatures and beings that need not be disturbed. There was very little known about these mountains, but nothing in the Phantom Forest region was ever easy, and there are some tales from the Draksin that say giants live in the mountains. Mathis knew though to try and travel through the lower valleys would mean slower moving and more chances of being noticed by the patrols that most certainly were everywhere, but if these so called creatures were there then there was a chance this road would be hazardous as well.

Mathis sat for a second looking back towards the east thinking of his home and then staring back towards the vastness of Nelbring. He thought of all the beings that lived in it and knew nothing of what was happening here. Right then as the sun was lowering Mathis saw it, the dark fortress. It started to blot out the sun as it dipped in behind the massive structure. The great dark fortress could even be seen from where Mathis was. Mathis looked upon it and remembered all that had happened to him throughout the great war, and he thought about what was happening now. Was it all about to happen again? Was Nelbring under attack once again by The Dark One? Mathis stood while holding a branch and went back down to continue his journey, and to answer his question.

Kraygoss was happy to see that Mathis had returned and was ready to get under way once again. So Mathis picked up his gear and they both continued west heading upwards now through the mountains. Their path now was going to be more methodical and slightly slower. The area they were in was unknown, then again everything they had just gone through was also unknown. Soon there were no trees just small bushes and short grass. There were giant boulders all about and the mountain bases started to crisscross all around. It would be easy for someone to get lost here and be traveling around for days. However, Mathis was very well trained on how to track and scout. He knew how to navigate such a place without any problems. The walk was becoming steeper as the mountains grew more towards the clouds, and now snow started to be seen in the shades of the rocks all about. The air grew cooler and the wind was starting to pick up the higher they climbed. Mathis was very grateful Kraygoss was with him. The cold air didn’t bother him at all and the Kraygoss pack had everything Mathis needed to survive the freezing night and soon to be days.

The wind had grown still, quite, and a breath could be seen in the air. Snow was falling slowly and dancing as it did. It covered all the ground. The light of the sun was gone and the moon had risen full and bright giving off enough light to see while walking. Mathis was on one knee inspecting something on the ground while Kraygoss was standing behind him looking back on alert. What Mathis was looking at was a large foot print. It was about half the length of Mathis and as wide as his shoulders. The track was pressed all the way to the ground which meant what ever made it was extremely heavy and made recently. It had three separate toes and the tracks continued in the way that both Mathis and Kraygoss were heading. Mathis looked up and stared as far as the snow allowed him to see. It looked as though the rumors of the giants were true, or it seemed anyways form this evidence. Mathis then stood and pet Kraygoss on the head. Mathis knew Kraygoss could smell something in the air, and was nervous at what might be out there. Speaking softly to him, “Let’s move boy”, then petted him on the head. Mathis and Kraygoss moved on with Mathis drawing his long sword at the ready.

The area that Mathis and Kraygoss came upon in the mountains was almost surreal. They followed a path that the foot prints were heading. The snow was heavy enough to cloud out the tops of the mountains. Everything was quite for the moment as Mathis and Kraygoss walked cautiously. The path was blocked on each side as the mountains made up the walls around them. As tall and steep as any castle wall the path that Mathis and Kraygoss were walking had but one entrance and exit.

Soon their path started to widen and there in front of the both of them stood a wall of rock and metal. It was a door built right into the wall of the mountain. The door stood over fifteen feet tall and ten feet wide. Its build quality was not of the best, but dense enough to stand off any attack. Mathis walked up to the door and touched it to examining it, trying to see if there was a weakness to exploit or open it. It seemed as though Mathis and Kraygoss were going to have to turn around and find another path, but soon they heard something coming their way. Thumps of heavy footsteps could be heard drudging down the path they had just followed.

Mathis quickly looked around to find some where to hide. Not knowing what was coming and how big, he wanted to avoid conflict if possible. The element of surprise was on his side and if he could avoid any unwanted conflict then their chances of success was greater. Soon Mathis noticed at the area that the mountain intersected the wall for the door, there appeared to be a high concentration of snow that had developed over time. There might be enough, Mathis thought, for a chance to cover themselves enough to avoid the passerby. Mathis rushed to the corner and started to dig and Kraygoss soon joined in moving the snow with ease. Soon they had a hollowed out area that would definitely fit the two of them. Mathis then looked around and had a quick thought on what to do with all the foot prints that had been made. There was no time to hide them. So Mathis looked at Kraygoss and knew wargones lived in all mountainous regions. Maybe this creature would notice his foot prints and not think twice. If not, then it looked as though a fight would soon be happening.

Mathis gave the command for Kraygoss to run to the opposite side of the door and come back. After doing this a few times. Mathis then pointed in towards the hollowed out region. Kraygoss jumped over the hump made by their digging and turned and looked at Mathis. Mathis made a hand gesture and Kraygoss laid down, and then Mathis proceeded to cover Kraygoss quickly as the footsteps, though caring and echoing down the path easily, could be heard getting closure. After Kraygoss was covered well Mathis jumped in and covered himself as well. Leaving just enough space to see out. Mathis was curious as to what it was they were about to encounter.

They could hear the creature moving slowing as it started to get closer to the door. Finally a figure started to appear shrouded in thick fur coats of large animals which covered its head, arms, and legs. It’s three toed feet walking through the snow as if it wasn’t even bothered by the cold. It was massive looking, and strapped to its back was a mace covered in spikes. The mace was as long as Mathis and the spikes were like dragon’s teeth with a leather cup keeping the mace in place and spikes from poking its back.

The face of the creature was covered, but its breath could be seen in the cold air like a cloud forming, and it grumbled as it walked up to the door. Once there it noticed the foot prints all on the ground. It looked around searching and looking for where the footprints might lead to, but there was too many and they were too random to follow. Mathis’ plan had worked and the creature gave up trying to follow them. It then walked up to the door and raised its arm and banged its fist three times. In the air a sudden horn could be heard from above. Mathis could not see as the snow covering him only allowed him to see from the path to the door, but soon noises could be heard of chains rattling and banging. The door started to raise and a slight orange glow could be seen shining out into the entrance area.

Mathis saw an opportunity to gain entrance and waited for the creature to start to walk forward, and as it did Mathis brought his head out above the snow and looked around to see if anything was watching. He then ran to the door as now the creature was in and far enough away not to notice them. It was a large tunnel that only had a few torches on each side lighting the way. The moon light could be seen on the opposite side. Mathis saw this as an opportunity to go, but he had to hurry as the chains for the door made noise and it had started to lower. Mathis turned back to the snow pile and whistled calling Kraygoss out to run his way. Kraygoss jumped up sending snow everywhere as he launched towards Mathis and the two jumped in just as the door shut completely. They were in but they were now in uncharted territory with an unknown enemy as it seemed. They still were in the Phantom Forest region and the only thing that Mathis could think of was what had the forest made this time?

The Harbinger Tales – “Friends of Old” Ep. (8)

Mathis stood against the wall of the tunnel that led to a room lite by torches. The glow washed down the walls and allowed both Mathis and Kraygoss to see. It also allowed them to move unseen as the hall was not lite hiding them. Both moved slowly and would stop if there was noise. Trying not to cause an echo through the hall as it was made to accommodate a giant. Mathis had a laugh in his head as he walked forward. He felt as though he had shrunk. While Mathis and others made their houses from materials around them, these giant literally made their house into a mountain. As they were approaching the opening he could see that a room opened up and show cased a large chandelier lite with many candles, which to Mathis looked like torches a man would be carrying around.

Mathis stopped just before getting to close to the opening. He made a hand gesture towards Kraygoss to lay down and hold his position. Suddenly the ground shook slightly and Mathis braced himself. Through the opening, a giant passed by and blotted out the light. Now Mathis had a chance to see this giant. It was stout in the face. A long slopping pointed nose and hair that grew in stiff forms of fibers just on the top of its head. They were bent back and then flowed down the back. He caught a glimpse of its eyes and saw that they were orange with a black pupil. Its body was stout from head to toe. Strong for certain, but it was twenty foot tall being making him even more dangerous. Nothing in Neilbring had been seen by Mathis before. He was curious as to why they had never been seen before.

Mathis needed to move forward and get on through this place. The fortress that he wanted to recon was still a long ways away. These creatures were definitely not some that he wanted to cross but going through here would be a faster route and safer to some degree. The climb over the mountain would be cold and slow. Then there would be creatures of a terrible temper out there to confront. Possibly getting in here and moving through here would be easier. He didn’t know if he would have got another chance to get in. Mathis realized as well that he wasn’t breathing hard. There was no signs of the fog here in this place. Mathis laid down and crawled to the opening to look about. Once there he looked about the room. There was no sign of any of the giants. He popped up and motioned for Kraygoss to move forward with him. There was a large table in the center. Mathis then looked up and saw the chanticleer. Then wooden beans as supports. He smiled finding what he was looking for. He looked right and there were columns that jutted out of the wall evenly spaced about the room. A man’s room would be made of small bricks and such, but here they were boulders to Mathis and Kraygoss. They ran to the nearest one and started to climb up.

Foot holds were easy for Mathis, but Kraygoss was having a harder time. Mathis stopped at one point and grabbed a rope from the pack. The looped it around his right shoulder then it went under his left arm. He then attached it to Kraygoss. Helping him gain a better footing and pull him up slightly if he slipped. Mathis knew however if Kraygoss did fall then both him and Kraygoss would be traveling to the floor. A floor that was fifty feet in the air. Sweat was pouring off his face making the climb. Kraygoss was standing straining to stay on edge. “Good boy”, said Mathis. Mathis felt the wall vibrate once more. He gritted his teeth. They needed to hurry and reach the beam, but the rocks were growing smaller and places to grab were getting far and few between, especially for Kraygoss. Mathis moved on up but found that the rope that he tied to Kraygoss did not follow. There was no spot to for him to move up. They needed to make another ten feet before they could make a jump to the support beam. The wall was starting to vibrate stronger, as a giant was starting to coming to the room.

“Come on boy just a little more”, said Mathis. Mathis freed his rope of Kraygoss and then climbed a little more up. He then jumped and landed on the beam. He turned and Kraygoss was moving up a little more. He then stopped and jumped himself to the beam, but landed on the side hanging on barely. Mathis jumped forward and grabbed at him, but he was too big. Mathis grabbed furiously, but couldn’t hold on to him. Kraygoss fail and landed on the table. The fall wasn’t too bad for Kraygoss, but now he was exposed to the giants. Mathis slammed his fist into the beam. Just then the giant entered the room. He jumped back at see the beast on the table.

“Well fella, I guess I see who was making all those tracks at the front of the gate. How’d you get all the way up here, and how did you get in here”, asked the giant? He moved slowly towards the table with his hand out towards Kraygoss. Mathis stood and drew his sword. Grabbing the rope he looked around for something to lash it to. Mathis found a stump on the beam, which he then noticed was a whole tree. Lashing, he then squatted and readied himself.

As the giant moved forward, Mathis leaped off the beam and held onto the rope slowing his decent. He landed on the table rolling forward towards the giant. The sword was drawn and then his other as well. “Bring harm to him, and you shall see what I’m capable of in bringing harm to you”, said Mathis. The giant took a step back. “You came out of nowhere”, said the giant. “Why look up when you are the tallest thing around”, said Mathis. “Ha, Hahaha”, the giant laughed, “I’ll have to remember that one, but seeing how you are an intruder in my home, I’ll ask a question before I dispatch you.” “There are two of us, and I assure you that we have taken down larger”, said Mathis. “Maybe, but it won’t be just one of me that you will be dealing with”, said the giant. Then suddenly the ground started to rumble and out of the other halls came more giants till the room was filled. Mathis and Kraygoss looked around, knowing that this might not have been the best of moves to make.

“Well now, looks as though you and your friend there are in tight spot”, said the giant. “We’ve been in worse for certain. Fighting the Dark One, Bragone, one on one is definitely harder than this. Though we are still alive after that”, said Mathis not faze nor afraid. “Bragone, a name that has not been heard in these walls in long time. You fought him, hard to believe that and to still be breathing. Further yet still be someone of a good nature”, said the giant. “Far better than most, I am a good person, though some would say I’m dangerous and a rogue, but that’s my life. I am alone in this world”, said Mathis. “Might we get a name of the person and animal that have invaded our home? For us you are a rat, mouse, pretty much a pest, and we don’t abide by pest”, said the giant.  “Oh, I’m a pest alright, but one that will cause death more than annoy, but if it is a name you want then I go by the Harbinger”, said Mathis. The giants in the room started to murmur about. The one giant that Mathis was speaking to raise an arm to quiet them. “The Harbinger, you say. I find that hard to believe such a person is still alive and would find his way here. I mean what is there to find here”, asked the giant? “Believe what you want, but that’s who I am and, as for what I’m doing up here, let’s just say I’m making sure that history doesn’t come back to haunt us”, said Mathis. “Ah, the old abandoned fortress of the orcs. I see, you have come to see about it”, said the giant. “Could be, but maybe this is the place that I should be seeking out and looking to”, said Mathis. “Hah, we are no friend of any orc, goblin, or dark creature. We are Grandire, the giant folk of the dark wood, or Phantom forest. We have lived here forever taken care of the forest, even in times that Bragon the Dark one was alive”, said the Giant.“ “How is it that we have never heard of you or seen you”, asked Mathis? “Most likely it’s because we never leave the woods. It is our home and we maintain it. Without us then it would have permanently turn to the Phantom forest. The very reason I bet you kept seeing the forest shift and change in front of your eyes was because we did that. We are still fighting the dark magic that hold it grip here”, said the Giant. “Then friend of foe, as I am a solider of light. I was there the day Bragone fell and when the great war chief of orcs cried out in death”, said Mathis. “I guess that’s to be determined. We cannot trust people from the outside. The darkness here is always trying to rid us, but our magic is strong and powerful”, said the Giant.

Mathis relaxed and through both his swords to the table that he and Kraygoss stood on. “I’m here to help in any way that I can. I have come to find the source of the Darkness here and put an end to it”, said Mathis. “Put an end to what, we haven’t been able to stop it for all this time, what makes you think you can”, said another giant. “Quiet all”, came a voice from the back. Everyone started to part as an elderly giant with a staff started to walk forward. “It’s been a long time Harbinger. I’m glad to see you one last time in my lifetime”, said the elderly giant. Mathis looked at him as he walked forward to the table and then stopped. He wasn’t quite sure who this giant was, but he was familiar. “Yes it’s been a long time. A lifetime for me, but for you time has not changed. You would have a hard time recognizing me at this size, but when you knew me I was but a solider at the start of the war. I would have looked like a very young Draksin, and very tall for my age. There was a battle for a great beginning, but it was for not”, said the giant. Mathis started to think and then memories started to flow back. “The Black Rebellion”, said Mathis. “Yes, our first attempt to over throw the Dark One”, said the Giant. “An attempt, yes, but nothing more. That day we saw how powerful he really was”, said Mathis. “Indeed, but it was you who showed up and saved countless lives, Mathis”, said the giant, “The day the Harbinger was born.” “You were there”, said Mathis? “I was and I will never forget you. You actually saved many of my kind. Most here are part of that line that you saved. We hid, and have been hiding ever since. The great war took place and we stayed out of this one. Not because we wanted to but because”, Mathis stopped him. “Because, the Dark One knew something in you all that could have helped him stay stronger than ever. You all possess an ancient magic, not strong in the manner of power, but everlasting. It had the markings of the beginning of magic, and was going to be key in a plan he had”, said Mathis. “Indeed, my friend and ally of the Grandire. Let me be the first to welcome you to the Great hall of Hiredome”, said the Giant.

The Harbinger Tales – “The Course is Set” Ep. (9)

Mathis and Kraygoss were enjoying the home of the Grandire. Mostly it had them out of the fog and was giving them a much needed break. From here they were able to get rest and food in the mountain home of the Giants. The elderly giant was much helpful in being a host to Mathis and his companion. His name was Waldern and he was the leader of the clan. They had carved out an entire mountain as their home. The many halls and rooms, to Mathis was more like vast castle halls, but for the Giants the rooms were just the right size. The great Hall was the largest of all, and was available when council was in order, a great feast, or gathering of lords and more. Mathis and Kraygoss were shown to a room that was actually their size. It was explained that the Draksin knew of the giants and that they were close friends. The Grandire never left however and it was the Draksin that needed to travel to them to see them. The visits had been long and few between lately. Mathis informed them that it was due to the fact of getting everything in order after the defeat of the Dark One. Much was needed to get in order and the lords of each group was spread across many fronts. Waldern was not offended and new of the work that was ahead in correcting the many decades of darkness that had covered the land.

Mathis wanted to know more of the fog and its source. Waldern was hesitant in talking about the fog and its powers. He told Mathis that they had been trying to track the location that was creating it, but it was to no avail. They had even lost a few giants to the cause. It had been a long time to since they had envolved themselves in an endeavor. Waldern was happy to once again be able to help in a fight. Mathis wanted to continue the conversation, but was starting to get tired from not sleeping in twenty-four hours. He wished the best to Waldern, but had to excuse himself to get some rest. Kraygoss was happy to be getting a rest as well. He had many times laid down and fallen asleep as they carried on their conversations.

Once in his room Mathis relaxed some and unloaded his pack. He sat on the edge of his bed and thought for a bit about what their plan going forward was going to be. From this point he would be able to venture out and come back, making marks and being able to resupply, and get rest after being in the fog for a long time. He would also be able to pack lighter and move quicker, but was enough of thinking. He laid back and soon was out cold.

Waking suddenly, Mathis got up and walked to his door. Opening it he looked about. The area was large and open. It played on his mind and he had to remind himself where he was located. It was still in the middle of the night and the halls of the mountain home was quite. He looked about both ways and then decided to move about the halls making his way about the rooms. As he did, Kraygoss was still asleep and didn’t notice that Mathis had left.

Walking about Mathis heard a noise. It was faint and to a giant the noise would probably not be heard. He moved to where the noise was coming from. Waling to a corner that then turned right. He looked down a hall way. There were a group of things lurking about the floor of the room. Three torches lit there group walking. Something about their movements was off, and it gave Mathis a bad feeling. He followed behind in the shadows. Trying to get closer to see who these being were. As he got closer, he started to hear a familiar speech. It was that of orc. They had broken into the Hiredome somehow. He had not grabbed his swords as he left. He clinched his fist upset at the absence of a metal object in his hand.

The orc group was staying close to the side of the walls like mice in this place. They seemed to know exactly how to get around and to be on a mission. Mathis knew that they were here for a reason, and he was going to see what that reason was for before dispatching them. They soon stopped before a great door to one of the giants rooms. Mathis saw that it was Waldern’s room. He knew that something was going to go down with him. He needed to be ready to stop them as fast as possible. Alerting someone would alert them and cause them to scatter. He needed to keep them contained and hopefully keep one alive. He had plans for that one.

The orcs funneled into the room through a crack of the door. Mathis saw that they left a guard outside the door. He knew that this was his opportunity to get one alive. Looking around the found a pebble that was on the floor. Taking it and then throwing it to the opposite side to where Mathis stood, the orc turned and drew his sword out. Looking towards where the sound came from. Mathis moved in quickly and silently without even alerting the guard. He jumped him knocking the sword out of his hand then wrapping his arm around his throat all in one quick move. The struggle was short and without noise. Mathis laid the orc down and then searched the body for something to tie him up with. Finding a belt he took it and tied him up so that he couldn’t move. He pulled him down the wall a ways so that if the others did scattered they wouldn’t free him nor kill him for being captured.

Mathis stood at the opening on the side and looked it. The orc group was moving over the bed side of the giant. Mathis looked back and saw the sword on the ground from the fallen orc. He grabbed it and slipped into the room. Action was going to be needed, but the numbers were hard to keep count of with so few torches and the darkness of the room. He moved closure and soon he could hear them breathing. Their talking was murmured as they moved about working on getting up the bed. Their move was to all attack at the same time and kill the giant. Most likely going to the throat. If all of them attacked at the same time it would be possible to kill Waldern.

“Why are they trying to kill you”, said Mathis to himself. Mathis set himself up and was ready to attack, but he did one more thing. He made a fist with his left hand, and he closed his other but left his pointing finger and the middle one open. He began to channel magic, something very few people knew he was capable of. An aura began to glow from his hands. He blew as if whistling, but there was nothing. Mathis readied himself again as he smiled. With quickness and precision he moved forward and stayed in the darkness. Swinging up he cut the first down. Then making but two steps he caught the other. The sound of the bodies falling started to gain the attention of the others. He kept moving forward and still he was cutting them down in one blow.

The secrecy of his attacks were now noticed and orcs started to run at Mathis. There were more than Mathis had counted on. It seemed as though even more had already entered into the room before the band that he was following. Then this wasn’t about just killing Waldern. “Waldern”, screamed Mathis! He knew if he could wake him then having a giant walk around would be useful, even if that giant was old. Still yelling out Mathis kept killing the orcs around him, but they were starting to get the better of him.

An orc fell behind him and he turned surprised. An arrow was in his back. He didn’t have time to thank the visitor as more orcs came in. There were more arrows flying in and hitting their marks. Suddenly a roar was heard and Kraygoss jumped on a couple of orcs and tore them apart. “Glad you heard my whistle boy”, said Mathis. Mathis reached down and grabbed another sword and kept moving forwards sweeping through the orcs laying waste to them. They started to scream roaring about the room. They knew the moves and recognized the ferocity of their attacker. The Harbinger was upon them. Four orcs charged Mathis but were suddenly all smashed to the side by a large axe. Mathis stood at the ready for such a foe, but then saw that it was a Draksin.

It would seem that I’m not alone here in this place”, said Mathis. “And one more to come”, said the Draksin as he turned and charged more. Mathis turned looking back and saw the archer that had been raining death down on his foes. It was a Vangor standing on top of a chair. Mathis made a gesture of thanking him for the cover and then turned joining the Draksin in the combat that was going.

Waldern started to stir and the orcs started to run away from the bed side. “I assume you followed a group in from the outside”, asked Mathis to the Draksin? “Indeed, we came upon their trail and soon we were here”, he answered. “Let’s just say we were heading over here anyways, and they interrupted us”, said the Vangor now sword out and working through the group of scattered orcs. “It seems that we have won the day”, said the Darksin. “What is all this racket”, said Waldern. “Watch your step Waldern, we are down here”, said Mathis. “Wha, what, why are, what the hell is going on”, asked Waldern? He rose and started to stand looking down to the floor. He saw all the orcs that had been slain and then saw that there were a few more visitors about the ground. “It would seem that we have guest, some that I know and one that I don’t”, said Waldern. “It’s nice to see you once more Waldern. It has been a while old friend”, said the Vangor. “You as well Dorloth”, said Waldern. “And let me introduce my companion, Trayon of the Vangors”, said Dorloth. “It is very nice to see a Vangor in these halls once more. It has been a while since one has appeared here, but let me introduce my companion and apparent savior I assume. This is The Harbinger Mathis.” “Indeed, we have been looking for you”, said Trayon. “Well it would seem you found me. Question is why is someone looking for me”, asked Mathis? “Our lords have sent us to help aid you in your quest. The threat of the Phantom forest is growing, and we are here to see that we put an end to it”, said Dorloth. “Apparently whatever it is knows that you are here. Your home was infested with creatures never seen before. They ambushed us as we came to see you, but you were gone and Dragus and the Draksins came just in time”, said Trayon. “The fog itself is a creature that needs to be understood by all”, said Waldern, “It can create and destroy its own monsters. Change the environment and everything.” “It would seem we found someone who knows a lot about this”, said Trayon. “They live here in the middle of it, so I would say that they should know something about it”, said Mathis. “Agreed”, said Dorloth.

The four new companions decided that it would be good to have a sit down and clean the area. Other giants were alerted to the intrusion and a sweep was made to find out how they were getting in. Dorloth and Trayon showed them where they were able to enter into the Hiredome. Mathis went to work on the orc he had captured. He was unwilling to talk at first, but soon convinced in a way Mathis had specialized. Using magic and some spells he was able to pull the information out of him. Much of it was not informing him what he truly wanted, but the creature did not have information to give. It became a dead end from that end. Once he was done with the creature he threw him into ta dungeon that the giants had created.

Mathis, Dorloth, and Trayon gathered their strength and rested up. Making plans and discussing what their next move was going to be. “I’m going to be moving on from here. The orc said that the old fortress is where they were located and traveled from. He didn’t know who was controlling he fog, but that it was being fed from somewhere close by. It’s not as strong as it used to be, but soon they would have enough power to move as it did”, said Mathis. “What this that you are moving on tomorrow”, asked Dorloth? “Sounds as if he intends to move on without us”, said Trayon. “It would be more prudent to have allies Mathis, don’t continue this journey alone. Use your allies and finish this together”, said Waldern. “You are good Harbinger, but taking on an entire army would be a fool mission”, said Dorloth. It’s not that, he lost, and so he wants redemption”, said Trayon. “What do you know of redemption”, asked Mathis? “Dealing death and wishing for it, never brings an end to the pain. IT never goes away. Life moves on, and she would want you to”, said Trayon placing a hand on his shoulder. Mathis brushed it off. “My life and history are mine, remember that. You can both join me, but remember there was a reason that I was living by myself, and what I truly seek is not what you seek in the end”, said Mathis.

Dorloth dropped his axe top on the ground, and knelt before Mathis. “What are you doing”, asked Mathis? “You saved countless numbers, and achieved more things than anyone here. We are here to say thank you and that we are with you till the end. We are here to support you”, he said. “All the lives, all the time. It doesn’t matter to me, if she isn’t by my side. I however, do not want to see any darkness in this land. It was the darkness that took her and I will take the darkness away, or die trying”, said Mathis. “That’s why then”, said Trayon, “You moved to the phantom forest because that was the last remint of the old darkness. You wanted to destroy it, or have it destroy it. IT wasn’t for saving and protecting. You want to die. Hence the reason you left alone”, said Trayon. “My decision as I said. You can come, but I’m doing this”, said Mathis. The others understood leaving the matter over. Dorloth and Trayon knew that they were going to have to be on the lookout. Mathis was a rogue here, no longer among the races of the free folk. Kraygoss laid by his side and walked away with him as Mathis left. He growled as he passed the others.

“A troubled soul that is”, said Waldern, “But a good one.” “It would seem our partnership will be a thin one at the most”, said Dorloth. “I don’t think we really have a partnership actually. He has been waiting on this. He is still fighting to rid the world of darkness, but it seems as though he has created a little bit of his own”, said Trayon. “Why is this? He has done so much, what happened”, asked Waldern? Dorloth lowered his head in sadness. He had heard of the tragic story of the love of Mathis’ life. Someone that was the only other person to grab at his heart. She was taken by the darkness, and after that he was different. Once the war was over he left to be free of war and battle, but in reality it to just keep close to the darkness to keep fighting and never be free. IT was his own prison.

“Prison indeed, that is what we have here”, said Waldern. “What do you mean”, asked Dorloth? “We are prisoners. The fog here is stronger on us than you. It has been made to affect us the most. It only travels here to keep us from leaving. The Dark One wanted us a long time ago and could not reach us. So he created the creature to keep us trapped. We do not stay here for the views. He wanted to be easy to find. Once we freed ourselves from his grasp we ran and hid knowing what he was actually trying to do. He found us once more, but was able to get us back. That’s when the fog came. It trapped us here, assuring that we couldn’t leave and we could be found. We have forged some means of moving about the area, but it is only temporary, and the vastness of the fog doesn’t give us the ability to get out”, said Waldern. “Then we will see to it that we are successful in free you. That is what we fought for so long and long ago. Apparently we haven’t freed everyone, and that’s about to change”, said Trayon.

The Harbinger Tales – “Moving to the Front” Ep. (10)

The morning was upon the mountain. Mathis, Trayon, and Dorloth were all up packing up what items that they were going to need. Kraygoss was loaded down with his pack and laying down watching as Mathis moved here and there to gather his things up. Waldern had showed them a supply room that the giants had been filling up for a while of all the things they find in the Darkwood. Many creatures roamed the woods and many of people have died in the woods even before the fog had showed itself. It had always had a dark presence to it. There were all kinds of trinkets and arms in the woods here and there. The supply room hadn’t had much added to it lately as the great war had been over, so the giants hadn’t found that many things as of late. The forest was ancient and had seen many things, some even said that it was the home to the old ones. Mathis is even said to be a decedent of them maybe that is the cause of him wanting to live in the same area. The whispers were swirling long ago about such a thing but it was never determined and Mathis never discussed it to any degree. He never wanted to know his history, just that he was here and the old ones were no longer.

The three men were finding all sort of things that hadn’t been seen in quiet some time. Trayon found a sword of his ancestry before the time of the Dark One. Its craftsmen ship was second to none. Its cutting edge was still as sharp as it had been when it was made. It will never rust and never dull. It was endowed with a magic of everlasting, something that had been lost long ago, along with the old ones being gone they took most of all their materials as well. Only artifacts and simple items stayed around hidden from most, found by a few.

Dorloth found an amulet that was made from the claw of the Great Griffin Colfang. He was alive during the burning sky wars. A war that saw griffins and dragons fighting each other over territory and sky supremacy. The griffins won the territory they wanted but at great cost. The claw of Colfang was harder than any material man made and could not be destroyed. It was said that there was a great hammer ax made long ago, but it was lost to the time forgot. The other item made from it was a staff that had an amulet made from the claw and marked with runes of an ancient language lost in time. The amulet was said to poses unknown power if connected to the staff. Dorloth took the amulet, because he believed he may know of the staff existence. It had been rumored to have been taken by the dark one long ago, and stored in the armories of the Dark Fortress. His hope was to one day gain the power that it was told to have, but it was never found, neither was it confirmed that he indeed had the staff. What Dorloth didn’t know is the Amulet did indeed have power in and of itself, just not all of the power. Something he would later on find out.

Mathis was looking through the supplies, but was not taking anything. “You see nothing that interest you Harbinger”, asked Waldern? “In my life, I’ve seen a lot, and have had a lot of things. This here is only memories that I don’t need. Most of what I have carried with me, is similar to most of this. This sword”, said Mathis as he picked up a sword looking at it, “I have one that was made during the same age.” “How can you tell”, asked Waldern? Mathis put it back down and started to walk out, “I made it.” Trayon walked over, as well as Dorloth, watching him and Kraygoss walk away. Trayon bent over and picked up the sword and looked at it. It was lighter than that of the swords he had but stronger in feel. It didn’t even have the runes that enabled it to be everlasting. It was just crafted that good. Looking on the bottom of the hilt Trayon saw a small insignia. It was the letter “M” and nothing more. “To have seen what he has seen and know what that he knows”, said Dorloth. Trayon wrapped the sword in a cloth and then tucked it into his pack. “He didn’t want it”, said Waldern. “No, but he deserves to have the history that he made in his hands. Maybe not now, but later yes. This is something I have to know how was made. IT’s greater than anything that I have ever seen or held. It’s handmade and nothing like it compares. I’m excited that I have found this”, said Trayon holding his new sword, “But this is something I have never seen, except with him”, he said pointing at Mathis. “Come let us go”, said Dorloth. Trayon agreed. They all thanked Waldern and then started for the rear back entrance to the mountain.

“Harbinger, I need to show you something before you leave, if you will follow me”, said Waldern. Trayon and Dorloth continued to the door. Waldern took Mathis and Kraygoss to another hallway that dead end. There Waldern took out a key and then placed it in a wall turning it the wall started to glow in a outline of a door with runes plastered in a shape in the center. It then seemed to turn to rain and then melt away. “What is this that you are taking me to”, asked Mathis? “This is something that only a few get to see. Once long ago, very long ago, we had visitors come to us. This is something that is not known to this world, but we were visited by the old ones long ago”, said Waldern. “What”, asked Mathis? “Indeed, this was a time after they had vanished too”, said Waldern. “What were they doing here”, asked Mathis, “And why tell me this?” “You looked at all the stuff in that room and wanted none. Even things that you had made, or even been around”, said Waldern. “And”, said Mathis. “You’re someone that desires nothing and needs nothing, and for that I’m going to show you something that has been left here for a long time. The old ones were here to find things that were left behind. They thought we had them and were on the lookout for them. One such thing is in here, one that they would want very badly”, said Waldern. “Then why keep it from them”, asked Mathis? “It’s because we giants believe it is the old ones that are at the center of all of this”, said Waldern waving his hands about. “What do you mean all of this”, asked Mathis? “Listen to me Harbinger, I don’t know it for sure, but I believe they are the just like the Dark One. They were not here to help or save anything. They were here to get things that could hurt them, or stop them”, said Waldern. “Then why not just kill you here and get rid of you all”, said Mathis. “Because they weren’t here so to speak. They were like half here and half somewhere else, but one thing is for sure, they knew your mark and wouldn’t touch any blade made by you”, said Waldern. Waldern wanted an explanation, but Mathis didn’t talk. “Anyways, what I want you to have, now that I know that you are not like them, is this”, said Waldern removing a cover from a podium. There floating with no strings or rope was a golden bow with green inlays. Mathis’ eyes widen at the site, “A Preion”, he said. Waldern looked at Mathis with wonder and questions.

“The old ones are creatures, not wise and beautiful. They were a race that once lived the same as mine. They all but wiped us out. They were here to take away things that could hurt them or stop them. They were here to stop me. They didn’t want me to find any of the things like this. Weapons of my people, the only things in this plan that could stop the like of them. A lot of this is making a lot more sense to me now”, said Mathis. “So, the Dark One was one of them”, said Waldern. “The Dark One was them”, said Mathis. “What”, asked Waldern? “I told you they are creatures. Formed from him as a part of him. It would seem we didn’t beat him, but just banish him from this plan”, said Mathis. “No, you destroyed him”, said Waldern. “But if you said that they were here, then he is still alive”, said Mathis. “Apart of him is alive not all. What you destroyed was the largest and strongest part of him. What’s left is weak and stranded. Whatever magic they used to get here wasn’t even strong enough to keep them here”, said Waldern. “Then that was it”, said Mathis. “What”, asked Waldern? “The thing that the Dark One was trying to do all that time. He was trying to bring or merge our worlds together with his”, said Mathis. “How is it that he is in another world”, asked Waldern? “My people long ago were in a great battle here with him and his creatures. We decided the ending and got rid of him, but it was at a cost that he made against us. He destroyed us all, and I have no idea how. My plan has always been to get revenge and find out how, but he’s gone, until now. There’s a chance to finally find out”, said Mathis. “The Perion is yours Mathis”, said Waldern. Surprised he was called by his name, “Why, why is it that you are giving me this now”, asked Mathis? “It wasn’t until recently that they visited us, only then we found out what was going on with these pieces. They knew of you and I knew about the pieces that were of your ancestry. They wanted nothing to do with them, but they wanted the weapons of your people”, said Waldern. “That’s because they are weapons that can actually kill the Dark One. Weapons of this plan have no effect of him, but my people’s do. This fog here, it’s something similar to him and what he produces”, said Mathis. “That’s why isn’t it that you wanted to live in this forest”, asked Waldern? “The only real reason indeed”, said Mathis. “Then take the bow Mathis and go. Get the Dark One, or whatever is out there”, said Waldern. “It’s close enough to him that I’m wanting to find out more, and then destroy him for real. I thank you for keeping this Preion safe from them. With this I’ll have a great advantage to a lot of things”, said Mathis. “One more, or two. We had these gauntlets as well. Their construction was similar and seemed to interact when close. We didn’t know what they would do, so we kept them separate”, said Waldern. He walked over to another table and pulled off another cloth. There sat two gauntlets.

Mathis put the gauntlets on and they started to glow bright, He then went and grabbed the Prion Bow. Together the glowed bright then sent out a flash. When the flash died off, there Mathis stood with glowing armor magically endowed around him. It was as if he was wearing none, but it was there perfectly set to him. “This the armor of my people. Formed from the combination of the Bow and gauntlets. It’s not the heavy armor, but for me it’s exactly what I would be wearing if there”, said Mathis. “I believe the time has come for you to go”, said Waldern. “Indeed, anything else you want to add before we go. You seem to know more than you have let on”, said Mathis. “Hah, we giants have been here to, just as long as your people. Though we don’t live as long, we have passed secrets down for a long time. We are here to see to it that this comes to an end, as just like you”, said Waldern. “Thank you again, for all of this”, said Mathis. “And thank you for finally showing us who you are. We have been waiting a long time for your people to return”, said Waldern. Mathis turned and saw that many other giants had showed up. Mathis bowed to them and then started to walk to the door, to join Trayon and Dorloth. The Journey was underway and they were now more prepared than the start.
