A Wizards Duel, By Joshua Gorrell

A dragon drinking water suddenly lifts his head. It smells the air and then grumbles. Stretching its wings out it lifts off the ground leaving the area. Wind started to blow heavily through the woods. Dark clouds were forming in the sky. It was like a hurricane was starting to blow in, but there was no rain. The power building in the air was starting to electrify every particle flowing around. Lighting was sparking in the sky then it shot out towards the ground. A great thunder could be heard shaking the very air in the valley. On the tops of two peaks there stood tow people, but these were not ordinary people, these were wizards.

One wore a White robe with a black under garment. He was bald, but had a long black bread. In his right hand he held a black staff. It had six flat sides that at the top protruded to six spikes. A blue sapphire stone sat atop. The other wizard was wearing a rich blue robe and pointed hat. Holding a smooth white ivory staff with a red stone in it. Each stood looking at each other. Though far apart on each mountain top, using their magic they stood right in front of each other. They could speak as if in the same room. The time had finally come for the two to face off. The years had been good to the white wizard, but time had come for his apprentice to take over, only that his apprentice was going to have to beat him in a duel to take his place. This wasn’t just a match of best magic workmanship, but a match to the death. The losing wizard was killed and then absorbed into the other. The white wizard had been doing this a long time, and was quiet versed in the powers of magic.

The white wizard had been looking for an apprentice for a long time, as he had defeated many young wizards. He had been training them for a long time. This last one was one that he was hesitant in wanting, but his time was running out he needed someone to take his place.  The magic slowly eats away at you, consuming every bit and leaving nothing, but the magical force behind. The danger of this force landing in the wrong hands is something that threatened the world.  Even if the white wizard wanted to leave the power over to the blue the magic would reject him. It had to be a worthy person. To take the power would be devastating to the blue wizard. Consuming him outright and then returning to the white wizard. The duel must happen and there must be a winner in the bought.

“It’s been fun old man. I have to thank you for everything”, said the blue wizard. “I do wish we could find another way, but this is the path that we are set one and we must accept it”, said the white wizard. “I knew what I signed on for, will gladly take that responsibility, though I will miss you”, said the blue wizard. “You’ve probably learned all the techniques faster than any of the others, but being able to use them will be a different story. There are no short cuts here. I will be trying to kill you, and you me, for your sake. If you don’t try to kill me then you will be destroyed”, said the white wizard. “Oh, I have no plans on this being easy, and I don’t plan on firing either. You better not hold back and show me what is possible by the mighty white wizard”, said the blue wizard.

The white wizard smiled happy to hear this from his protégé. He was ready for the duel, but was he ready for the might of a great wizard? Placing his staff in both ands he then raised it with the blue stone facing the sky. The sky was already blacked out with raging clouds with lighting blasting about. A bolt fierce and bold came crashing down striking his staff and lighting up the e stone brighter than the sun in a blue hue. Then it deemed, taking the staff then placing it back as it was in his right hand and the base on the ground, he was ready.

The blue wizard took his staff and held it high with one hand. Another bolt screamed down striking the red stone flashing a brilliance all about. Then it deemed, the blue wizard spun it around then placing it in both hand with the stone facing the white wizard. The stone started to glow a deep red ready with the energy bestowed on them for the battle.

The battle would be fair in strength, as each wizard was granted the same in power, for if the white wizard was granted his full power then this battle would be over before it began. The gods saw to it that the chosen had to outwit the master not out power. The duel was ready, and nature new it time to see who the new one would be. All the creatures ran for cover. Birds landed staying out of the sky, fearing they would get hit by a blast of magic. The time was now for everything to be decided.

The blue wizard started a chant, the stone on his staff lite a brilliant red and then an arc of red light burst forth from it. The white wizard smiled and slammed his staff into the ground forming a clear bubble. As the lighting hit, it shattered in a brilliant light, scattering all about the bubble but not hitting the white wizard it was blinding. Once the light was gone he focused and saw the blue wizard was on the move. The blue wizard had jumped holding the staff and used it to create a disc to fly on. Moving forward the blue wizard formed a ball of energy. Throwing it, he hit the bubble but it only bounced off, he through another, then another to no avail he was doing no damage. The white wizard smiled knowing he would never be able to hit him.

“You can keep throwing them, but you will never get to me, and you’ll run out of power before you can get to me”, said the White wizard. “Who said I was trying to hit you”, said the blue Wizard. The white wizard’s eyes focused, and then noticed it. The energy balls were bouncing off, but they were not falling away and vanishing. They were bouncing off and just floating about. Soon they encompassed all the air around the wizard. There was no escape, as the white wizard was grabbed the staff tighter ready for what was to come. The blue wizard stopped flying around, and raised his free hand right out in front of him with his hand open. His eyes glowed as he started to say a chant. Suddenly all the energy balls shuttered and then froze. The blue wizard started to close his hand and the balls of energy started to close in around the white wizard. The blue wizard though for a second to stop, but then the white wizard yelled out, “BRING YOUR BEST!” The blue wizard refocused and then yelled as he closed his fist quickly. The energy balls streamed in attaching to the bubble and then once all attached, a tremendous explosion brightened the sky.

The blue wizard used his staff to form a shield to protect himself from the explosion. The smoke was thick and surrounded the area in which the white wizard was standing. Echoes started to ring about, the blue wizard had a funny face, as he could not understand what it was, and then he understood. Trying to glide down, a bolt of lightning came flying out towards him and struck the disc he was flying on. It shattered sending the blue wizard flipping through air. He screamed as he lost control of his staff and it flew from him. Slamming into the ground and then rolling a ways, he stopped not moving for a bit.

The white wizard tapped his staff on the ground and disc formed for him. He glided slowly out of the smoke and towards the area in which the blue wizard laid. “That was a great attack, unfortunately it only destroyed the bubble, and did nothing to me. That gave me time to attack back”, said the White wizard. The blue wizard laughed lightly, but with pain. “Well it got you to move a little anyways”, said the Blue wizard. Standing the blue wizard was holding his side left side with his right hand. Looking down at his left hand he saw blood was on it. His face was scrapped up from the fall. “Well that was going well”, said the blue wizard to himself. He then looked about for his staff. “The one thing that I always told you, always keep that staff in your hands”, said the white wizard. “Yeah, yeah just give me a minute I’ll have it back”, said the blue wizard. “There are not minutes here to give”, said the white wizard as he quickly changed a spell and a storm of glowing arrows formed and started to fly towards the blue wizard. He jumped to the side and rolled to a rock. The angle of the falling arrows aloud for the blue wizard to hide behind it, and that was all the time he needed. Taking his hands and cross intertwining his fingers, he chanted and his hands glowed. From the distance a small light started to glow then brighter. Then a staff flew up and straight towards the blue wizard. The blue wizard stuck out his right hand, and it slammed into it sending out a shockwave but his hand and arm didn’t move. “Shall we continue”, said the blue wizard? The white wizard smiled and then brought both hands to his staff at the ready.

There was a swirling of dirt, dust, limbs of tree, rocks, water, and anything else in the area, as a cyclone of fury was formed around the wizards. Blue and red light flashed here and there, as the two through magic prowess at each other trying to hit one another. The sky echoed the effects with lighting striking about the ground. The ground shook in the area as if an earthquake was upon the region. Animals fled if they could but some were swallowed up in the chaos of the wizards duel. Time faded and the light of the day changed to and faded to black and white as the magic of wizards were on display towards each other.

Suddenly a lightning bolt of unmeasurable size came from the sky and struck the ground. The explosion through everything away from the scene, and the cyclone vanished. There standing in the middle of the ground that was flattened, the white wizard stood and the blue wizard was on the ground on all fours holding his staff. Blood was falling from his side and mouth. The white wizard was marked up as well, holding on to staff to help stabilize himself.

“It seems as though we have come to the end of this my old friend”, said the blue wizard coughing up blood. The wizard looked up in the sky breathing hard. Tears started to form as stepped forward “It does indeed”, said the white wizard. “Just make it quick will you”, said the blue wizard. “For you yes”, said the white wizard.

Taking his staff and raising it high the blue sapphire started to glow and then he swung it down. Times seemed to slow and just as the staff was about to hit, the blue wizard faded and the staff struck the ground sending out a ground smashing hit that created a crack in the ground. The white wizard froze then suddenly felt something slip through his chest. He grabbed at it and found a blade was stuck there. He coughed and blood came flowing out. The blue wizard was standing behind him beat up and tears in his eyes. He pulled out the sword and through it to the ground catching the wizard as he fell to the ground.

“A sword, hah”, said the white wizard coughing, but wasn’t coming up. Light started to snake out of his wounds. “Your more knowledgeable than me on magic, figured anything that I came up with would not be good enough to stop you, but I did have one trick up my sleeve”, said the blue wizard. “You moved so fast I missed you, but I never saw the sword”, said the white wizard. “I didn’t move fast. That first lighting strike had more to it then met the eye”, said the blue wizard. He explained that he created the blinding light, and in that moment the created a clone of himself, in which he could control mentally, but would take damage just as he would if it were him. He used that clone to keep him occupied and lure him closure and closure. As he did so, the nonclone would be hiding in the rocks moving about getting closure till the moment was right.

“It was almost too late, you did almost take me out. That’s the only problem with that clone. I feel everything”, said the blue wizard. “I’m very proud of you. You definitely found a weakness and tactic that helped you, and in the end it was not magic that did me in but a sword”, said the white wizard. Placing a hand on the blue wizards shoulder he said, “Now you are responsible for the power. Good luck my friend, you will be a hard one to replace. I chose very well.” The white wizards hand started to relax, then it fell to the ground. The blue wizard bowed his head, then laid the white wizard on the ground gently. He stood and then walked over and picked up his staff in both hands holding it horizontal starring at it. His face grew angry as tears flowed. He screamed and then through it down onto his knee screaming, the staff broke sending out a shock wave. He through the pieces on to the ground and started to walk over to a spot and moved some rocks. As he did so with the intention of burying his mentor and friend, a light caught his attention. He turned and saw that the white wizard was glowing and then his body turned completely white then it turned into ta glowing light only. The light grew tendrils that spawned out and grabbed on to the blue wizard. He tried to fight, but then it the light started to enter his body. A vortex surround him and the screamed as the power started to enter into him. A light came from his eyes and mouth, then as it started it stopped in an instance. The blue wizard was on a knee on the ground breathing heavily. He stood looking at his hands and then noticed that he was no longer in pain or hurt at all, and that he was now wearing a blue robe. It was a white robe though slightly changed in design, something that he had always wanted to make it look like.

A figure suddenly appeared in front of him saying, “Do you approve the look.” The blue now white wizard shocked looked up, “Master?” “No longer just a man, but yes it is me.” “It’s done isn’t it”, asked the white wizard. “Yes it is done, you are now the white wizard”, said the man, “You need not worry about me, I’m fine and here when you need me, in fact all of are, we have been with you since the start.” The white wizard looked about and saw a slew of wizards standing about. It was the past wizards that had held the right of the wizard. “You I would be standing here”, asked the white wizard? “Not exactly, as time is always changing, but it was for certain when you used the clone to bit me. They saw it and knew the outcome was coming forth. You are now forever with us and we with you. You are now the power of this plain”, said the man. The white wizard looked at his hands and then focused. The staff that he had broken rose from the ground and then slammed back together fusing as if never broken before. It flew over to him and he opened his hands as it landed in them. “Then I guess I’ll be needed this”, said the white wizard. “It wouldn’t hurt to have it”, said the man. “Well then”, said the white wizard as his eyes started to glow, “Let’s get started.”
