A Day in the Life of Brad, By Joshua Gorrell

Oh, hello there. Yep, that’s me. Laying there dead. You wouldn’t think much of me from looking at me there, and you’d be right. My clothes are plan. If I can get my comb over to even remotely cover my baldness that would be a miracle, and let’s not even discuss the shoes. I mean I’m not fat, I work out a little bit. I should just shave my head, I mean isn’t that what the ladies like these days. Oh, wait, I’m dead, right.

Don’t really know if you’re wondering how I got here in this predicament, I’m not, well that’s because I know.  I know it all now. Death is a funny thing. No one sees it coming, even the people who want to commit suicide. I mean I’m an uneventful guy. I didn’t do much, hell I didn’t do anything. Life was there and I was there, now I’m there, lying there, motionless.

Damn the days you decide something and that commits a whole series of actions that lead to one finite action. Watching TV and doing nothing is always something, but at least it doesn’t end like this. Well I guess on the other hand it’s better to die here, maybe. I mean you could die just sitting on a couch watching porn or something. Hah, yeah, I could see it now. That a-hole of a land lord banging on my door. “BRAD”, knock, and knock, “BRAD, you in there. Your rent is due, god damnit.” Hah yeah I’m not going to answer dick weed. Finally he opens the door and boom, he is hit with the odor and scene. Me dead on the couch and porn playing. Hahaha, yeah get that image out of your head douche. That would be a way to go, it’s not necessarily honorable but memorable. I mean think of all the possible rumors on that one, almost endless, just like this joke I’m telling myself.

But no, here I am laying in a hallway. Its dark, there a flickering light, and there’s no one. Who knows how long I’m going to be laying here. I tell you it had to be that one douche of an a-hole Brice. He came right up behind me and bam, shot to the head. It was over dude, come on. I mean the little girl was gone, she was safe. I got her out of the room and she was back to safety. Douche just couldn’t stand to lose. Yeah, I got that good shot right to the jaw when he came in the door as I was untying her. Don’t ask me how I got around those guys. No one suspected me to have actually followed Brice. Hell, I didn’t know where she was hidden. Got to admit though, you kidnapped a high and mighty kid from the big city then get her out in the boonies of no wheresville, into a an old bunker of sorts, yeah I wouldn’t have thought of that. I mean the cops where all but thinking they were somewhere in the city. Clever in keeping guys posted all over the city to attend to getting the ransom.

That trip out here though something I don’t want to do again. What am I talking about, I won’t. God Damn you Brice, you lost, so suck it. These “F”ing hallways in this place. Can’t find my way out of them to save my life, hah. Was it a left, left, right, then left, or Right, right, left, right, and then right once more. Hell I’ll probably just stay here and watch my corpse rote away. Nope it was a Right, left, then left again, pass the john, then take that right, then on the right stairs to a door that opened a hatch to the outside. Then you hiked like two miles in the thick ass forest to where their vehicles are parked. Long gone I suspect now. Yap, camo nets and branches used to cover them up are the only signs left. Wonder if I can run, or fly, or what in this form. TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR AN UBER RIGHT NOW. Nothing, alright, walking it is. Guess seeing if Brice was still around for a lift like he did before would have been too much to ask for as well. Thank god rednecks love trucks. Though why they call it a bed, I’ll never know that shit was not comfortable.

Wonder how the girl is doing? Man must be walking faster than I thought there’s the City sky line. I mean she has to be happy to be home I would imagine. I would be, I would love to be home right now watching something, even porn would be preferable BRICE! Ah who am I kidding, can’t afford descent cable, couldn’t even watch it if I wanted. Nope, that would just be wasted on me anyways.

Alrighty, I’m here, dang that was fast. Maybe I can fly or something. Where to go, AH, yeah, o I got to revisit this place. Brice might have got the last laugh, smug bastard, but this is definitely the reason he hated me so much. Hah, if he only he caught me at the start, but let’s take a moment and admire this first.

You know I didn’t think it was going to be this quiet here. I mean, I’m dead, not a whole lot of anything here. Guess I shouldn’t have expected too much, then again I didn’t quite expect to end up dead. Ah, tomato tamato. Over all I don’t feel too bad, BESIDES THE WHOLE BEING DEAD THING! SON-OF-A-BITCH! Whoa, got to keep cool. Where am I? Ah yes back to admiring.

Let’s see, ah yeah I’m here. Hahaha, love it, you know chairs in movies break a lot easier than they do in real life. I wasn’t quite excepting to knock him out like that. Damn, didn’t realize I crashed him through that window of the shop either. I guess if not for me the cops wouldn’t even had an inkling of where they might be. Little on edge I guess these guys were. Well, Brice might have been a little bit more. I mean come on, a professional kidnapper and a commoner takes you out, yeah I’d want me dead to. Might should have though twice on picking on him. But come on I nearly got the girl free here at the shop. Brice came running down the hallway to the front, I was around the corner with that chair and timed it just right, and WHAM! Dude pancaked the floor. Guess I could have just ran there, but the dude was freaking getting right back up, what had he been eating, Wheaties, are they still a thing? Anyways, Goldberg speared that ass through that window, not gonna lie that hurt a little. Guessing old Brice whipped lashed that head into the concert, I can see a little blood, but the cop’s marker kind of helps on that to. He didn’t get up from that, as fast, but did give me time to hide and then follow him to his truck as the cops started to catch up. A-hole must have been trying to force me this way though. I mean I was heading right for his truck. That one cop car started to come down the road, if not for that I wouldn’t have been able to jump in the back. Yeah, he must have been confused and dazed. He couldn’t get his keys in the door. I mean who doesn’t have a remote these days, come on man. Wait am I rooting for the bad guy?

I’m not going to lie that shit did hurt though, just thinking about crashing through that glass and hitting the ground is making me remember. Movies, they suck man, but I bet it looked awesome, but hell nah not worth it. Guess I’ll be stuck with these scratches forever, not to mention the ventilation in my head to. “F” you Brice. You know what, I wonder if they have any footage of the first time I screwed you over. I would enjoy watching that again. I mean the police are still here it looks like. Maybe there still there.

Down another hallway, never noticed what kind of shop this was, but yeah I have no “F”ing clue what they make here. Is this even a shop? Oh wait, this is a lobby, yeah I ran through here. That was the restaurant that also opened up into this freaking sweet ass hotel. Yeah I would never be caught dead here. Hah, yeah, I’m here now, and yeah, ah if you can’t laugh at yourself what can you do. I wonder if that food was any good. This place was busy a few hours ago. Cops here to, guess we left a pretty good trail to follow. Yap we open to another street and across from there the board walk, and there they are the finest foods in the city. Can’t get any better than fried food on wheels. Also can’t get any better than screwing over a bad guy, well in this case not dyeing and preventing the kidnapping, but hey, I’m not perfect.

Let’s see, ah a police van looking as though this might be the focal point. What we doing guys, let’s see yeah there watching the camera footage from the security cams on the lights. Let’s sit back and see the excitement. Ah, perfect timing too, there starting from the beginning. Yap there’s the family and the girl enjoying the nice sea air. What the Hell? Is that Brice? Mother “F”er is a body guard, No wonder he wasn’t spotted. Yap and there’s another one hiding out as a regular dude. Hey, there’s a good looking guy coming on up to the taco stand. Well a well above average dude, ah it’s just me, whatever. Yap here it comes, are you ready Brice, yeah give a sec. BAM, BAM, whoa he was fast in his shooting the other two guards. Wait they were after the boss man, guess I screwed that up as well. Your welcome Brice, ha-ha fucked you over. Yap there I go pushed your ass off the board walk. Yeah but that other douche, then grabbed the girl and ran. Guess they had a backup plan. Then I go and run back to the Hotel.

“Yeah we have Mr. Perkins in a safe location”, said a cop over his mic. “What of the person of interest, any word on him? Mr. Perkins wants to thank him personally.” “We are about to have the other security footage in hand and heading your way”, said a policeman over the mic. “Roger”, said the cop back.

What person of interest, me? Hell, yeah I’m a person of interest, I “F” in saved the day, for the most part. Though I’ll never be found, but hell yeah. Wait what the hell? You telling me…. No. Brice climbed up and just started running my way towards the hotel. Because cops were there. He wasn’t even after me. What the fuck? Well that explains a lot. Why I was able to surprise him and everything, fucker didn’t even know it was me that pushed him over. Yap, that makes sense back to being an average joe.

“Brice Wilkerson, age 30, 6’ 2”, Black hair was last seen leaving somewhere near Brookfield”, said the radio. “Roger, we need to find this person of interest that called in the kidnapping. He attacked Brice and freed Mr. Perkins, maybe he was a part of it or something we don’t know, but he definitely knew his name easily enough”, said the cop. “Last call from person came close to Brookfield, we have units responding to the area as we speak”, said the radio back.

What the hell do you mean a part of it? I WAS THERE TO EAT SOME FREAKING TACOS YOU A-HOLE! I heard his name called out by Mr. Perkins when he surprised them, guess I should be sorry I heard that. Doesn’t matter, none of this matters. The girl hasn’t been found yet, what the hell are you doing? You say you have units up there. I broadcasted that phone call, for certain those badies heard it as well, then they left quickly enough, but couldn’t find her. Its night now, I’m tired, is that possible for me. I woke up this morning sat enjoying some low grade shitty TV, and the day ends with me dead. What a day indeed. Right there, right down there. Only a few blocks and two turns.

My door and there’s my couch. How did I get here so fast? I was just at the board walk. Whatever, I’m here now and I’ll do what I should have done at noon, just sit and be hungry. Hell, I could have had delivery. Eat or not to eat, that was, the question. Hah, I never did actually eat. Goddamn you Brice, I hope you die, but I hope…. I hope she lives. She was so scared. Wait what, I’m back here, but how did I get back here at the bunker. What’s that noise? It’s coming from behind.

“Please don’t cry, I wish I could help you”, said Brad. “Is it safe to come out now”, said the little girl, “I’ve been waiting quietly like you said, but I’m getting scared and want my daddy.” “UUUHH, yeah it’s safe”, said Brad, “Okay what the heck, can you hear me? Wait, what are you doing, no wait. Hey, I’ve got you, it’s okay now. Let me see you now. Looks as though I hid you well and you stayed hidden well too” The little girl shook her head yes. “How’s about we get out of here”, asked Brad? Again she shook her head. Brad grabbed her hand and led her out of the bunker.

Wat is going on here? How is it that she can see, and hear me? This is got to be the weirdest thing. I’m I really dead, maybe I’m not, but it doesn’t matter, she looks at least somewhat happy, and what’s with me talking to her like that. I was calm and all. I’m not calm, I’m way past calm.

“Alright, Lets open up this door, okay”, asked Brad? Pushing the door open they emerged into a dark wooded area. “I’m scared in the dark”, said the little girl. “It will be okay just hold my hand and I’ll get you out of here”, said Brad. They walked a little ways and then stopped. “Why are we stopping here”, she asked? “I don’t really know, but I tell you what, It feels right”, said Brad. “What do you mean”, she asked shaking? Brad kneeled down and placed his hands on her shoulders, “I can’t explain, it’s something that has me feeling that you will be safe here. That someone is going to come for you.” “You’re not going to leave me”, she said grabbing on to him. “No, no, I’m going to be right here till they get here, I’m not going anywhere”, said Brad. “They, they who”, she asked? “Well, the people who are going to take you to your daddy”, said Brad. “My daddy, really”, she said jumping into his arms. “Yes, your daddy, will be here soon and you can go home”, said Brad stroking her hair.

What is going on here? I’m dead, I could see my body there. There was blood, and everything. I was just sitting in my apartment, then bam here I am. This is weird as hell. I need a freaking Taco for certain. What the heck is that noise? Oh, shit it’s a car or truck? Shit is this Brice coming back, what the hell? Nope, there are more than one, and yap those are freaking red and blue lights, hell to the freaking yeah.

“ANNABELLE”, and voice yelled out! “That’s my daddy”, said Annabelle, “Come on.” “You go”, said Brad and let her hand go.

Why can’t I move forward? What is this feeling I’m getting? Annabelle has her dad though. They look so happy. “Search the area”, a cop yelled out. I can save you the time fellas, and say there is nothing down there and no one, but look if you must. Fellas, um hello, fellas you a listening? Whatever. “We have a body down here”, said a cop from the door of the bunker. “Looks like the person of interest we have been seeking”, said another cop. Hah, yeah I’m dead still. At least she is safe, guess I’ll be seeing you around Annabelle.

“Baby, I missed you so much, oh my baby”, said Mr. Perkins. “Daddy, I missed you too”, said Annabelle back. Grabbing the sides of here head gently he asked, “How did you get out baby, and out by yourself?” “I wasn’t by myself daddy. There was a man here. He helped me. He saved me from the bad men”, she said. “What man baby”, Mr. Perkins was saying when a policeman walked up. “Sir, the body we found was the man of interest from the boardwalk. Looks as though somehow he made it out here. He was shot in the head and is as far as we can see the only one here.” “Any word on who he is”, asked Mr. Perkins. Brad freaking Ogletree you douches. “Johnson, any word on our would be hero”, asked the cop? “Yes sir, it’s a Brad Ogletree, 35, lives in an apartment on 83rd street close to your hotel sir”, answered a cop. “Explains why he might have been in the area then, does this gentlemen look familiar sir”, asked the cop? “Yes, he was the one who knocked Brice over the broad walk. Are you telling me he is the one dead down there”, asked Mr. Perkins? “Yes”, said the cop. Annabelle interrupted, “Who is he daddy let me see.” I don’t think you need to see baby”, said Mr. Perkins. “Maybe she can I.D. him as a perp”, said the cop. Mr. Perkins shook his head and the cops showed her the picture of Brad. That’s the man who saved me. He snuck into my room and snuck me out before the bad men could get me. He helped me find a hiding place and then ran away on the phone. I heard a loud noise. I stayed quiet and still like he told me too. He came back though and led me out of there. He was standing right here when you got here daddy. You need to give him a hug. He was really nice”, said Annabelle. Mr. Perkins and the policeman were dumbfounded. “Are you sure the man down there is this man”, Mr. Perkins asked? “Yes, sir”, said the policeman, “But I’m going to get my men to do a sweep and check the area for anyone.” The cop walked away and Annabelle said, “That was him daddy, I know it was.” Mr. Perkins stared into his daughters eyes and then gave her a big hug looking up towards the sky thanking god.

Your welcome, I mean you didn’t mention me, but you’re welcome. I guess you did see to it that I was here after all. Did you really have to give me a craving for tacos today? I mean all I did today was get up for a freaking taco, whatever, she’s safe isn’t she. You know I’m glad I got to see her safe and sound, but was it too much to ask that Brice get his come upins. I mean come on let me at least get to enjoy that.

“WE’VE GOT A LIVE ONE OVER HERE”, said a policeman. Everyone rushed over and surrounded a man that was passed out on the ground covered slightly by some brush. “Who is it”, asked Mr. Perkins. “It’s Brice Wilkerson”, said a cop, “Need an ambulance. Suspect has lacerations on face and hands. Seems as though he passed out from head trauma over here at some point. Woke up a little as we got here and was in the process of covering up to hide. He’s been beat up pretty good too, but he’ll live, you hear that punk, you’re going to live and then live out your days in jail.” Wow, really, thank you so much for that, couldn’t have asked for much more, well maybe, that you didn’t have to kill me. Ah, whatever, I mean I was the one that sat there since getting up, and decided on going to eat. I could have gone out and eat or stayed in and made something, or called in, or drove somewhere, or hey head to the board walk, but yeah I decided to do that and get a taco. A freagin taco.
